ALL dogs need a lot of attention. It's not a good idea to get a dog, already knowing that you can't give it the attention it needs. That is the number one reason so many dogs and cats die in shelters in this country.

I would recommend a cat. They require MUCH less attention.

Also, a previous poster recommended a Lab, and I have to say that that is like the opposite of a dog who doesn't need much attention. They require a lot of exercise and time. They may be healthy and live a long time, but they are very energetic and can be pretty needy. Best of luck.

It sounds like you need a cat....but you want a dog...but smaller dogs usually need more attention than larger dogs. Since small dogs need alot of attention you should think about getting a lab. The don't need must attention, or maintance, and do not have very many health problems, live long, and are a great dog that you can play games with and take places.

To be honest, I would recommend a small, short haired mix breed dog. The mix breed has a new gene pool, so hopefully you won't have any inherited problems, and the short hair would mean that you don't have to keep brushing it and have it groomed. Plus the shedding will be at a minimum. Also mix breed dogs are fairly cheap, if not free. A canine rule is also the smaller the dog, the longer the life span, so be prepared to take care of your dog for the longhaul. Don't break it's heart by abandoning it or giving it to someone else....your dog loves you, not someone else. Best of luck with your decision.

I would definitely recommend a cat. Dog's, while some require less attention then others, still require more attention then a cat. Think of a dog as a child. Cats are self sufficient for the most part.

I would not get a dog if you don't plan on giving it a lot of attention - dogs in general crave attention and it is very much needed in order to train a dog - if you don't have time for it - don't get one - this is how millions of pets end up in shelters - because people don't realise that pets are so much work and they ALWAYS require attention. So please, do the dogs a favor and wait till you have the necessary time to get a dog

I live in a small apartment and I have a Rat Terrier. Rat Terrier's are small dogs, max weight about 20 pounds, that are very fun loving and friendly. They are known as shadow dogs meaning they are very loyal to their owners. They are also active inside meaning your dog will get plenty of exercise inside so if you are not home a lot you can rest assure you dog will be healthy. If you want more info check it out at http://www.ratterrierclub.com/. Enjoy and good luck. Just hope that someday you can be the person your dog will think you are.

All dogs need attention. Get a stuffed dog if you dont want to give it any attention. Small dogs need just as much or more care and attention as big dogs. Some can be as active, too. Dont get a puppy or dog unless you devote time to it!

Why would you want a pet if you are not going to give it any attention? Do not get a dog if you are not planning on giving it attention!! It will be miserable for both of you. Get a fish tank, or if you want something to hang out with, but you are gone a lot, get a cat or some type of reptile

I agree with the others. Dogs, especially small dogs require a ton of attention. If you dont want a pet that requires attention, get a gold fish.

I highly suggest that if you do not want to pay much attention to your dog, you should really think hard about getting one. Dogs are very needy and need lots and lots of attention. Try a stuffed animal instead.
