RELAX. Take a deep breath. A needle going into a relaxed muscle does not hurt much at all. A needle going into a tense muscle hurts like a *******. You're in sixth grade already, you're a big kid, almost a teenager. You can handle this. It's one tiny, tiny needle. First, tell the nurse that you're scared. Ask her to do it quickly. Let your mom hold you. Shake out your arms before the shot. Relax them and let them go dead, completely limp. Make them really loose, like jell-o. Take another deep breath. Look away. Take long deep breaths and concentrate on something across the room. It will be over before you know it. The more relaxed you are, the less it will hurt.

The worse you kick and scream, the worse it's going to be. Just remember that you've had it done before and it didn't kill you. OK, so it hurt, but THAT'S YOUR FAULT!!! The absolute best thing you can do is relax all your muscles as much as you can and don't -- DO NOT -- watch as they give you the shots or take your blood. If you struggle, kick, squirm, pull, jolt, or tense up IT WILL HURT TEN TIMES WORSE. Relax. Take it easy. Take your MP3 player along and listen to music while they're doing it if you have to. And for crying out loud STOP telling yourself that it's going to be such a terrible, painful ordeal. Get that thought out of your mind. Close your eyes, take a few nice, easy, deep breaths and keep telling yourself you can handle it/it's not going to hurt THAT badly/it'll be over before you know it. You'll be surprised how much easier it is to deal with shots and needles when you don't get all wound up about it.

Okay, I've had my share of shots, so I think I can help you.
One thing you want to do is R-E-L-A-X. Most shots don't really hurt any worse than mosquito bites do. But if the needles give you the willies, find something else to stare at. If you have any brothers or sisters, get them to make silly faces at you: It's hard to be scared when you're laughing. ;)
Another thing you can concentrate on- and my mother swears by this- is wiggling your toes. And a few deep breaths never hurt anything.
Good luck in school!

Please calm down. Breath slowly when the time is near and realize it is just a small pinch and then it's over, my son has this fear also. Just think of the medical stuff some kids have to put up with and they get through it. You will be fine and it is all over with so soon. Just look away while it is happening and picture something pleasant in your mind, like a day at the beach or meeting someone famous.

relax. you're making the nurses work overtime. blood draws are no big deal just don't look at it and keep talking to someone else or you'll just freak yourself out.
when you get to the office remember to keep breating. in your nose and out your mouth big deep breaths. i don't like shots either so i don't watch and try and talk to someone else if there is someone else there or the nurse if we're alone. it helps to have distractions. you're arm is gonna be a bit sore especially if you tense the muscle, but if you keep it moving it will be less.
ps if you don't get the shots you run the risk of getting REALLY sick. it's boosters for stuff you don't want to get. and if you tense up you'll make it worse. trust me. i did it for a shot on penicillin and could barely walk a few hours later.

Divert your attention to something else. Work on doing breathing exercises to relax. Breathe in as deep as you can through your nose...exhale as slowly as possible through your mouth. Continue to do this and tell yourself to be calm. Good luck to you sweetie. It really isn't that bad. It is worse if you are tense because the needle doesn't go in as easily into tight skin. Just relax and breathe. And don't watch!!!

Take deep breaths. The doctors know what they're doing, they're not going to put the needle in the wrong place and kill you. It will be over in 10 seconds, but it takes longer if you squirm all over the place.
