Great question with some thought behind it....I like that! We were born into sin. We are not capable of not sinning! God expects us to ask for His guidance, even though we have free will. If we are believers and our sins are washed clean by the Blood of Jesus, we know we need to ask for His forgiveness every day. We need to read the Bible and seek to be "Christ Like". The only way we will be punished is if we do not believe that Jesus was God's Son and that He died to save us from our sins. Otherwise, the price has been paid for our sins by the Blood of Jesus. Did I make any sense?

Its like a child with their parent we punish our children because we love them. It is a sin (wrong doing) when you do not obey the rules. Blindly obedient? I think that is a cop out. Just because you have free will doesnt mean you can live as you want. Thats exactly what satan wanted to do when he was in heaven. So God gave it to him. Sent him to earth and a hell awaits for him and all the people who chose to live own way without God.There are boundaries. No matter who you are.Just like I tell my girls no matter what choices you make there are consequences. God gave us free will because he loves us and he wants us to freely chose him. If you want to do your own thing then you will suffer your consequences this life or the next. Thats just the way it is. Do you think our mere human minds could really understand the power and magnitude of our creator? We didnt creat him why question every little thing around, I mean you'll never going to get an answer to everything you don't understand. He is a loving God that doesnt demand your love He wants to give you his love and blessing. May God bless.

What do you conside punishment? Are you talking about hell or are you talking about consequences for actions and choices?
We are supposed to sin, that is how we learn and that is why we are granted forgiveness when we truly ask for it.
If we didn't sin, would there be any unhappiness, grief, pain in life? And without these negative emotions to compare joy to, would we really feel anything at all?
I guess I'm saying that God gave us the ability to reason and choose because we have to for our own personal growth. We are just supposed to acknowledge and learn from the sin.

Sin is the result of disobeying God and his requirements. God intended the whole human family to live in a paradise-free from sin and death. God realizes that humans are sinful, however, it doesn't require us to be perfect. He wants us to be obedient and live by his commandments to have a better life.
Humans want to make their own choices and live how they want to live and God allows us to do so. But, this isn't going to go on forever. If we just follow Gods suggestions on life, then we wouldn't have alot of the problems we have today.
God didn't force Adam and Eve to eat the fruit, they wanted to be independent of God and make their own choices.
Now you see what choices humans make, away from Gods direction, can do! Just look around the world and see what a mess this world is! Because of choice!

God doesn't punish us for using the gift of choice. All choices have consequences.. we learn more of this the older we get. He gave us a brain and the ability to tell right from wrong so he can see what we're made of. It's never easy doing the right thing but eventually if you do the right thing for long enough, you will be rewarded more than you can imagine.

obedience is not blindly because you know what would be the end result & you know why you are being obedient to God. Free will is a wonderful gift from God otherwise were all wound up at the back jack.

I will try and say this as simple as possible;
We are created with free will but choosing something bad has consequences - he didn't create free will without consequence. Even if we were left alone to make our own decisions not to follow God our intentions and thoughts will become evil conitnually because goodness only comes from God not Satan or ourselves. Matthew 24:22 Unless those days had been shortened, no flesh would have been saved. But for the sake of the chosen ones, those days will be shortened. This text even shows us that if God don't even return to get us we will still not survive we would end up destroying ourselves.
Freedom to choose is not without consequence that is why God implores us to choose Him because He alone loves us - Satan wants to kill us.

First off it wasn't a gift, we've always had freewill and the ability to choose, however our choices* have not always been the same. Eve's choice to eat from the fruit of the tree of knowledge (tricked or not) after that her eyes were opened. Before she ate the fruit Adam and Eve were in a sate of...innocence? Like a child when he walks around naked. With this her choices were now made more abundant and clear. As before she could not see she was naked, I don't mean see literally, you know what I mean by "eyes opened"? So now there for she can choose to wear clothes. With this opened a new way of thought not just what she saw but I imagine how she saw other things as well.
Your question verges on asking to define good and evil. To choose consciously between them, and why we should be punished for doing bad. What ever bad is. As wrong is defined by God that is. Choosing to do wrong as in hurt people or kill. Is punished because God as our father says its wrong. God says you don't have the right to take life, that is not your place. He doesn't mean don't protect your self, again were talking about consciously doing harm to another person. But by choosing to kill you are doing wrong.
So when you asked why does he let us choose between them, and then punish us for doing wrong? Then I image maybe he's trying to teach us. As a parent teaches a child what is right and wrong. To open your eyes and see it for your self why its wrong. And it is the person who finally says " Yes I see why its wrong to kill..." then kills. Is why he's punished. Its why his angels who stood by Satan were cast out and why Satan was too.
Right and wrong, are defined by a morals, and what exists. To choose is to say that right and wrong have been established and to reason is to say we have knowledge as to what is invariably right or indeed, wrong. Why should people who do wrong, because they know what their doing is wrong, be punished?
Because their wrong, and the choose to be.

Where there is no ability to choose, there is no ability to love.
God corrects us when we make a poor choice because he loves us - similar to the way a good father corrects and disciplines his children.
Speaking as a father I don't want to FORCE my children to make the right decisions. I want to help them learn how to make those decisions on their own. So that one day they will be able to do the same for their children.
Man wants to know everything in black and white, but God wants us to choose from the heart.
See reference scripture below...

We are put here as a test, which means our actions are "ours", but we pay for them in the end. If we had no "choice" then what would be the point in living? Why would god create us to blindly follow everything he wants? We are here for reasons unknown, but I believe god is testing every last one of us every day of our lives.
