1. the state or states in which the doctor practices
2. the specialties ranked from 1-7, 7 = neurosurgeons
3. the length of time the doctor has been practicing (it goes up to a maximum after 6 years)
4. whether it is a "claims made" or "events" policy (whether the coverage is for the date of the incident or the date the lawsuit or claim was filed)
5.any tail coverage and riders
If can cost as little as 20,000 dollars per year to beyond 200,000 dollars per year.

Almost all fields of Medicine require you to carry malpractice insurance if you are smart. As far as the amount that will depend on how independent your practice is and how much if any coverage you have from your group or hospital.
