I recently had a German Shepard put to sleep for Mange. At least, the vet thought he had mange but was unsure. He had got loose and sent to a shelter. The shelter didn't even hold him for 24 hours before making the decision to put him down. They didn't even wait for us to contact them about the dogs because by the time we found out that he got loose and sent to this certain shelter they had already closed for the night. We called first thing in the morning to find out they had put our dog down. Is this right?

It's a shame, for sure. You might have a case for a lawsuit. Check your local laws on the required time for holding a lost dog. Was your dog wearing a collar with ID tags? Was he microchipped or tattooed? If not, you might have a hard time winning your case.

This is wrong
By law animal shelters are ment to wait seven days before they do any action on an animal so that people have time to collect the animal.
i suggest speaking to a lawyer and the police force.
even if he had mange it is a treatble condition that would only take a couple of weeks to get rid of.

no, shelters are required to hold the dogs for at least 2-3 days while trying to contact its owner & you do not put a dog to sllep for mange, its curable w/meds. They are wrong!

No, it isn't right. And mange can be treated. I frankly don't understand why the shelter didn't try to contact you. Though I MIGHT understand why they didn't want the mange to spread: It is contageous. But that's what quarantines are for.

I'm not sure if there are any specific laws, at least there aren't in my city. It might just depend on how crowded the shelter is.

SHELTERS ARE BAD LIKE THAT~~~AS SOON AS THEY GET AN ANIMAL THEY CAN PUT IT TO SLEEP FOR NO REASON AT ALL IF THEY FEEL LIKE IT~~~~THEY MAY JUST FEEL THAT NO ONE WOULD HAVE WANTED TO ADOPT IT*****OR A LOT OF THE TIMES THEY WILL JUST KEEP THE PUPPIES & DESTROY THE OLDEST OR MOST UNATTRACTIVE*******

It would vary from state to state, possibly even on a more local level. I would recommend starting by calling your mayor's office.

That is so horrible and I am sorry....however it is required in most states. But if they were unsure you should try to sue.

I am very sorry to hear that, it's a shame that happened. Too bad they don't take care of criminals that quickly.
