Sugar alcohol is a another type of carbohydrate however each gram contains less than the typical 4 calories. A lot of the low-carb products put sugar alcohols in their products because they don't spike your insulin like traditional sugars (glucose, dextrose, sucrose, fructrose etc).

As far as I know, sugar alcohols have no ill effects other than that they may cause gas in some people. I think sugar alcohols can be identified as sorbitol and maltitol (basically anything ending in -ol).

Hope that helps.

You'll usually see it listed as Maltilol. For some people it is an acceptable sugar substitute, however many people find that it either slows or stops their weight loss or causes "intestinal disturbance". Your mileage may vary.

Personally, I believe in staying away from artificial products as much as possible and concentrating on fresh, whole, homemade foods (although I will occasionally make a treat with an artificial sweetener like Splenda).
