Everyone has stated a lot of good stuff already, but...
Sodas contain huge amounts of sugar that your body stores up as fat.
There is more truth to 'beer gut' than most people think. One of the properties of alcohol is that it causes your liver to retain more fatty tissue. The more you drink, the more shows up and it's really not that healthy. Beer really does cause you to get fat around the middle.
Light beers and most dark beers really aren't that different in calorie content, and should never be considered 'diet beer'. There's no such thing.
Start an exercise regiment and start flushing your system with water (yep, 8 glasses a day) and cut out the soda completely and you will not only see results in a couple weeks, but you will feel better, too.

Yes, beer really does make you gain weight... lots and lots of it if you're not careful... I read a study that said an average American would lose 10 pounds over the course of a year if the only change they made to their diet was to replace every Pop with water.

I don't think you will lose weight, I know you will. Lite beer has around 110 calories per can, and soda has around 120 calories per can. If you cut that out of your diet, or drink diet soda instead, and beer in moderation, you will lose weight.

Yes it has been proven someplace that both can cause you to gain weight. I know for a fact that if you take soda off your consumption list that you will start to lose weight. Lost 5 lbs in 2 weeks.

Both beer and regular sodas contain calories--but without much nutritional value. In other words, unlike other foods--fruits, for example, that offer vitamins in addition to their calories--beer and regular sodas offer no nutrition. They are "empty calories." Also, regular sodas are sweetened with "high fructose corn syrup." This is a cheap sweetener, but studies have shown that it affects the body's natural insulin systems and actually is worse for you than regular sugar. See the Washington Post article below or do a google search for "high fructose corn syrup" to see others.
If you drop regular soda and beer and stay consistent in your activity level, you will lose weight. Fewer calories=less weight.

yeah, if you drink water instead...it's simply a matter of replacing beer and soda (lots of calories) with water (no calories).
Try doing some cardio vascular exercise and you'll lose it even quicker.

Yes, soda esp. has lots of sugar. Drinking lots of beer means ingesting a lot of calories. Wean yourself off of the soda...I used to drink plenty of that, but slowly got myself off of it. I can tell you, now I feel much healthier.
Drink lots of water, eat whole-grains, healthy fats (nuts, avocado, fish), treat yourself to moderate amounts of dark chocolate (it's good for you, just don't overdo it) and you'll find yourself feeling more energized and much healthier.
