"theos" is the Greek word for God. So a theist is someone who believes in God.

If you are thinking of American history, and the difference between a deist and a theist, then a deist (god from the latin) believed that God set everything in motion but keeps his distance from it's daily workings.

A theist believes that God made the world and has a deep and abiding interest in what goes on in it on a day to day basis.

That's a short answer. You could study it more.

A theist believes in Theocracy. The Vatican, Israel, and Nepal are theocracies. Theists think that God is, and should be directly involved in Government. The USA rebelled against Theocracy, and Kings with divine rights in general. Most of the atheists on this site, don't believe in God, period. But they do love politics.

Theism is the belief that there is a higher power or higher powers that effect our lives and have a presence in the world. It encapsulates almost every religion (there are some that are more like philosophies, so it's debatable whether or not they're theistic). In a sense, it's religion.

Theism
(from Greek theos god) is used in two meanings: It can be either the belief in God and/or Goddess as unitary being or specifically the belief in God as creator of the universe who is actively involved in maintaining and ruling it.
