I like a really fresh, chunky salsa. I'm not talking about Pace or whatever brand they make, that is just tomato paste and a couple jalepenos.
The best stuff is either Rojo's, or just whatever the grocery store makes fresh (whether it be Safeway, Albertsons, you get the point). I want all chunks, not a bunch of dripping sauce. Basically pico de gallo with a little more liquid.
And it depends on what I'm eating for how spicy I like it. Chips and salsa, as hot as you can go. But if I'm eating something where I want to savor the flavor, I'll go for a medium/mild salsa so the taste isn't masked by my burning tongue and runny nose.

The only decent store-bought salsas you can get are the small quantity, craft salsas you can only buy in grocery stores in the Southwest... everything else, like Pace and the other synthetic salsas sold in grocery stores outside the Southwest, are just slop when compared with the 'real stuff'.
I go south every winter and bring back a couple of cases of REAL salsa. My favorite is Mrs. Renfro's salsa, but there are others that are very good.
Then again, I also make my own, but I have to be in the mood.

Make your own. So much better, very easy & the recipe will keep in the refrigerator for months because of the tomato base.
Norm’s Salsa Dip
1-28 Oz Can Contadina Crushed Tomatoes
3/4-Cup Chopped Green Onions (with tops)
3-Cloves Garlic (finely chopped)
1-Tsp Salt
1-Tsp Ground Cumin
2-Tsp Cilantro
1-4 Oz Can Chopped Green Chilies
1-Jalapeno Pepper (seeded & finely chopped)
Mix all together & chill. Allow at least 30 minutes for flavors to blend before serving with tortilla chips.
This is mild salsa. For extra spicy add another Japaleno

Honestly, I think there's no solution but to try lots of types and see what kind you like the best. People are really picky when it comes to their salsa. My friends and I very much disagree about it.
One of my favorite brands is Kigali, found in the Northwest. Often, the best kinds are in the refrigerator sections of the grocery store, and sometimes in the deli. Most people don't look there, I've found.
I'm also with Steve S up there on the chunky fresh stuff.

The cheapest kind is usually my favorite. Sometime, I would like to experiment with making my own salsa. It could not possibly be very difficult, as it is mostly chopped onions, tomatoes, and spices and certainly all of the ingredients could be purchased from any grocery store.
Tostitos, El Paso, Taco Bell, and other store bought Salsas honestly taste indistinguishable to me. I like Medium to somewhat spicy salsa. Nothing that burns.

Pace is the best. Old El Paso is pretty close.
