If I were to discover that life only existed on this planet and nowhere else in the universe (highly unlikely) then I might be persuaded to consider that God existed.

The burden of proof is with the believer. You can't prove something doesn't exist. For instance, I could make up a god right now and you'd never be able to prove it doesn't exist, because there are no facts related to it that you can refute with logical argument. For this reason, I cannot prove that there is no God, because there is no God!
Therefore, this places the responsibility on the believer to put a case for the existence of God. Since all arguments eventually founder on the rocks of logic and good sense, believers fall back on that old chestnut: faith. Faith is basically another word for prejudice. It means holding an opinion without any logical or reasonable basis. Shrouding religion in mystery and moralising doesn't take away from the fact that it is merely prejudice in fancy dress.

Science has got the upper hand so far, they have proved that we as humans have only walked this Earth for a tiny part of it's life. Dinosaurs existed millions of years before man took its first breath. According to the Bible Man was created just a few days after the creation of the Earth.
The only proof faith currently provides is in scriptures - but yet they all talk of different Gods - The Greeks, Egyptians, Christians, Buddhists, Hindus... so many religions all giving their own opinions and ideas on how we should live - Not a single one offering evidence of such a Gods existence.
I am an atheist - I share a common scepticism with many people regarding the lack of evidence of any deity. For me to have a sudden leap of faith, to believe, I would need to hear from God; have him speak to me. I do not deny the existence of Jesus - in fact I believe he did walk this Earth; however, God created everything we see about us, yet he gives us no evidence that he is a true being or mass.

The question assumes that some of us Christians have never been atheists. As a former atheist, the proof of God for me was when he changed my life from what it was to what it is now.
There are plenty of atheists who will say, "yeah, I was a Christian and believed all that God stuff and jesus stuff, but then I got all these questions in my head and God didn't answer them for me so I gave up on him. That was my proof: his silence."
To those atheists I say that you do not have "proof": you have nothing. Nothing doesn't prove or disprove anything: it's nothing. If you want to be someone who's waiting for a lab test to come back or a prayer to be answered or whatever, you go on testing -- but be honest about the kind of answer you are willing to accept. If the only answer you are willing to accept is the 1,234th digit of pi, then you are looking for the wrong God.

A better question is how does an old person in great shape with no physical issues die in their sleep? So far the explanation is "they died of old age".
The only explanation that makes any sense is that it was time for the spirit to leave the body. The physical body needs the spiritual body for physical life. The spirit can function without the physical body, but the physical body cannot function without the spirit.
And you ask what proof? It is completely impossible to prove that God doesn't exist, because clearly He does.

Absolutely nothing. I have too much evidence to support the fact there is no god, in the xtian sense anyway.
One simple fact, is their whole religion, was and is, based on much older beliefs that predate xtianity about 6000 years. Sumerian, to be precise. The old testament is a corrupted sample of Sumerian beliefs. If xtians were actually allowed to research their own religion, a lot more would be realising this fact!(that would mean losing the emotional crutch, though...hard for most of them to do, considering that's why they need their religion in the first place!)

I suspect that neither side delineates what they accept as proof because there's no way of either proving or disproving that which is not tangible or sentient or empirical. You can't use scientific means to disprove God any more than you can use faith-based means to prove his existence. They are two distinct forms of knowledge.

Look, I can't prove to you that 'god' doesn't exist, you can't prove to me that 'god' does exist.
Calm down, have a shower, come back and think of an ORIGINAL question. Seriously, the amount of people who ask this....
You have your beliefs, I have mine so just get on with it! You can't change anyones mind so stop trying.
You have to learn to be tolerant of other people's beliefs.
Hard, concrete evidence would MAYBE change my mind. The world isn't evidence, neither is the Bible. There is no evidence in our mortal world that could sway my decision. It would have to be something that transcends our mortal existence.

Let's see, for starters:
Make life from a bunch of inert chemicals (cloning /copying life through genes or stem cells does not count). We are not talking about psuedo one celled blobs either - I mean living, breathing, reproducing without any external stimuli etc.
Show me where monkeys are still evolving into man.
Show me where any species is evolving into another quite different species.
Although I could ask if anyone could prevent disease or death - as many scientists claim, I won't since it could be said that these are expected as a course of life.
How about those, then maybe I might listen?

Could you DEFINE what you conceive as being Your God before we even have a change to awsner this one. if its a mythical figure with jolly disposition that wants us all to be good then as he has so obvioulsy failed at this that version is non existant if its the energy of creation the fact that the big bang happened and we are all here is proof that it does exist.
for something inbetween which is 'most peoples God' the definition is istself enough to proove wether it exists or not!

Given that there is no valid evidence to demonstrate the existence of any supernatural agency, be it a god, a ghost, or a boogeyman; I find there is more than sufficient evidence in the natural world and in the human condition to conclusively demonstrate that no such thing as a god exists. Arguments to suggest god exists are by their very nature, irrational.
