IAMS for cats is generally universally safe.
I wouldn't feed most of the commercial brands to my cats because my oldest has had Feline Urinary Syndrome like 15 years ago. Any kind of food with a high ash content could set him off. 6% or less is usually good.
If you're feeding more than one of either drastically different ages, or one or more health concern, talk to your vet and get a recomendation. At one point, I was feeding two three week old kittens and a 10 year old with a history of the above mentioned health issues. In the past, I was feeding food specific to FUS, and got a kitten who basically had her kidneys never fully develop because of that food. she died of kidney failure at age 9.
Again, I can't stress this enough: If you're feeding more than one cat with different nutritional needs and you're not going to keep them totally isolated from eachother, talk to your vet!

I would stay away from Purina or cheap type foods. In my opnion Iams and Science Diet are the best. It depends on your cat what formula to get. Meaning an older cat, or long hair cat would need a different food from a young cat. Unless it's a very small kitten they do not need wet food at all. That just dirties their teeth and then you will have to get their teeth cleaned by a vet a lot sooner, and that costs a lot of $$!

Human food, according to Vets, must not be given to Cats. Although it's not completely toxic to Cats, human food should not be encouraged.
I feed my cats dried cat food to prevent any indigestion. Vary the flavor every month so they wont get tired of the taste.

I have always fed my cat Sebastian who is 6 years old dry cat food.He just loves Meow Mix and only eats this and nothing else.Occasionally I will give him some can cat food like on his birthday or for X-Mas.Never fed him human food so he doesn't beg for any.Dry cat food and fresh water daily and he is still healthy.

just about all of the food made especially for cats are good for them. just an exception: special kitty brand sold at walmart (and possibly other places)....this has too much magnesium (i think that's what it is) and can cause basically stones in the cat's urethra. this is more likely to happen in males. it happened to my male cat, and there was a stone blocking his penis and preventing him for using the bathroom...he was backing up and if i hadn't caught it when i did he could have died.
