would you break a promise?

Although breaking a promise hurts you, the one to whom you made the promise and your life-acquired integrity, there are circumstances that mitigate (reduce) the damage done to these three entities.

Let's say that you promised to do something big and you just forgot. We'll have to say that you have broken a promise without cause. We'll say that's bad; how bad is it?

Let's say now that you promised to do something small like take the trash out but your mother had an accident in the kitchen and you had to take her to the hospital then spend the day in the emergency room making sure that she was ok. You still broke a promise...but isn't the life of another somewhat more important than that?

If the concept of a promise is really important to you then make sure that you consider the pre-emptables (fire, famine, floods, hurricanes, tornados, war, etc.) that could take you out of the ordinary scenarios into the macabre. This might make you put caveats into your promises (I find myself doing that) like "if the situation doesn't change," or "everything else being equal," etc.

If promises mean nothing to you then you probably make them without thinking about or caring whether or not you will honor them.

Bottom line is that a promise is your word and what that is worth is up to you. Make it count...or not.

Depends. If someone made me promise that I would be at a certain place, and it just so happens that I find out if I go, I will be killed (hypothetical) of course I would break the promise. And chances are the person who I promised would be happy I broke it, because they want to see me live, right?

In certain cases, it's in the best interest of all parties for you to break a promise, but for the most part, try to keep your word.

Yes, if the promise is made when I was not in full possession of the facts. If a friend tells me to keep something secret and I discover they are going to attempt to hurt them-self or rob a bank or something equally bad I am under no compunction to keep that promise.

Depends. Sometimes I have made promises with no intention on keeping it but wanted the person to leave me alone or get out of my face.

Yes I would, but it'd have to be a really good reason to - like if a life was at stake, or someone's safety, or if I was absolutely wrong to make the promise in the first place.
