Listen to your Mom. Dachshunds may look cute, but they can be very aggressive and hard to housebreak. You can get any dog you want when you move out and live on your own. Then you'll be responsible for all the training and all of the bills.

Quality dogs are expensive to buy and take care of. An adopted dog may cost as little as $35 - a good purebred pup can cost $1000 or more. Puppy shots are another $200, then $100 a year for boosters. Annual Heartworm test and preventative medication $100. Professional trainer $600 and up. Going on vacation? Boarding kennel $40/day. Spaying? $250.

Dogs are terrific companions but they require training and discipline and exercise. You can't hang out and party all night with your friends, because you have to be home to take the dog out. The smaller the dog, the more often they have to go out. What happens if you go away to college?

If you want your own pet, you could get a rabbit or a guinea pig - they're friendly, easy to keep, live in a cage, don't have to be walked or trained.

BEFORE you get any dog you should read some great books on training, so you'll know what to do. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

When you're ready for a dog, find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the AKC site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money. The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are often kept in deplorable conditions - spending their entire lives in small wire-bottomed cages. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there.

If you live at home, you need to live by mom's rules. Dogs are messy and noisy at times. I have had 2 dachshund mixes and find they tend to have anxiety. They are adorable and have lots of personality though, and they are not generally biters (though the one I have now likes to taste people more thn I would like). They are like toddlers, I would say, and hate being left alone. Wait till you're on your own, and then get whatever dog you want.

I dont have one you can have but I fostered an elderly long haired standard black and tan. I fell in love with her. She was abandoned at a cinema and brought to my grooming shop looking for a home. I took her on a temporary basis cause I felt bad for herl

My grabdaughter named her Zowie...pronounced like Zoe..She had many medical problems that we couldnt afford to pay for. A local dachshund rescue took her and she got help with the medical issues. I didnt have her connections so she was able to help where I could not.

I fell in love with her, what a sweetie!! Sorry to write a novel but I really loved that little cutie!!

Wait until you are grown and get one. Or wait until you are older and maybe things will change. I breed dachshunds and absolutely love them. They are the most loyal, loving and precious breed of dog! I have a wildboar colored one and two black and tans.
If your Mom changes her mind, check out animal shelters to adopt one if you can't afford to buy a puppy. They ARE demanding dogs regarding attention!

so you want to get rid of leo so you can have a dachshund? you sound very inmature and uncaring about animals. when you get an animal, it should be for life. not untill you see a cuter dog. im glad your mom is saying no and im sure that is why she is. leo needs your love and if you dont love him then yesssss give him to someone that does! excused me but you sound like a spoiled brat! just my opinion!

I have a dachshund and her name is Coco. She is so cute! She is only 6 months old. She's afraid of grocery bags, a box of treats, and hula hoops.

You should listen to your mother, and love your collie :)

You have plenty of time, when you grow up, to get any type of dog you want
