Okay..first let me say I was raised in a church that does not believe in speaking in tounges, they teach that it was done away with in 1 Cor 13:8. I have come to understand that this verse also say's: where there are tounges they shall cease, where there is KNOWLEDGE it will pass away.

I've studied this chapter out very carefully and I don't believe "knowledge" will be done away with also as tounges. I've looked up every word in the greek. It would seem to me that this verse has been taken out of context.

I can't seem to find one single scripture that say's tounges, miracles, interpretation of tounges, healing etc..were to cease at some point. I always thought there was some verse that was very clear it would...I'm eating crow!

Show me where these gifts were to end. Please I don't want to hear long winded reasons...just the bible verses

Hello there, let me just say that I have been raised in a church for 10 years now where speaking in tongues does happen, it should not be done away with that scripture has been taken out of context, I am at work right now and do not have scriptures with me, but if you would like, I can talk to my pastor and get scriptures off of him why that speaking in tongues is evidence of the Holy Ghost. Please email me if you wish to speak more of this subject.

Well see... The gift of speaking in tongues were given to the apostles so they could spread the word, as Jesus commanded them to do. It meant being able to speak in a persons native language, which they did not know. The 'speaking in tongues' that goes on the churches today is not the same thing... it is not any language at all.
Now, I have been told that it is supposed to be a prayer between you and God and that because noone else can understand what's being said, Satan cannot interfere with your prayer. I don't know if that is the thinking among all of these denominations but it doesn't make any sense that Satan would be able to interfere with your prayers to begin with.
Anyway, the point is is that what is practiced today is not the same thing as occured in the Bible.
Hope this helps :)

O.K. the original speaking in tounges was supposed to be a spontaneous ability to speak in a foreign language in order to preach to foreigners and convert them. The idea that it is a gift is because it was suppose to occur in some righteous person who did not normally know the foreign language that they were "miraculously" speaking. But the current version of speaking in tounges is a rediculous non-sensical babbleing that is not any language, nor does it convey any messages or meaning from god. It's nuts, I've seen it many times and was told by practitioners of it that you just let yourself go. It make NO sense to anyone.

I don't think they were. In fact, I'm pretty sure they were commissioned to continue!

1 Corinthians: 4-11

"There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but they all come from the same Spirit. There are different ways to serve the same Lord, and we can each do different things. Yet the same God works in all of us and helps us in everything we do.

The Spirit has given each of us a special way of serving others. Some of us can speak with wisdom, while others can speak with knowledge, but these gifts come from the same Spirit. To others the Spirit has given great faith or the power to heal the sick or the power to work mighty miracles. Some of us are prophets, and some of us recognize when God's Spirit is present. Others can speak different kinds of languages, and still others can tell what these languages mean. But it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us."

But how do you define speaking in tongues? Miraculously being fluent in a language you've never studied? Or merely being able to reach a great many people across certain barriers and have them understand?

"THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PAUL THE APOSTLE TO THE
CORINTHIANS
CHAPTER 13
Paul extols the high status of charity—Charity, a pure love, excels and exceeds almost all else.
1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing.
3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing.
4 Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up,
5 Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil;
6 Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth;
7 Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things.
8 Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away. "

-----I know this is way long, but looking at all the verses before the one you're talking about, it seems like it is just saying charity is more powerful than tongues, prophesies, knowledge. etc. It doesn't seem to say tongues will (or did) go away, it seems to say even if they did, charity would outlast them. So maybe they're still around...I believe whan tongues is used though, if it is used today, it is a gift to talk to others, and whoever is being talked to will have the gift to understand. I don't think incorrent babbling that has to be translated counts as tongues.

There are no verses I know of that end gifts. Many think that gifts were only used to validate the gospel story and to get the gospel spread widely in the beginning. I believe the gifts are still available today. However I have been around Charismatic Churches for about 15 years, and I am a fair bible student. i will tell you that what you see in every Pentecostal/ Charismatic churchs today is false. Why they do it I do not know. Either they are deceived or they are trying to lead people astray-but it is not real.

1 Corinthians 13:10- But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away with.

This is a common verse people use to say gifts such as tongues, healings, prophecy have ceased. Interpreting "that which is perfect" as Jesus.

I grew up in church this way, but since then have personally experienced the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It wasn't until I began a personal relationship with Jesus that the gifts became manifest in my own life.

I have found the knowledge of Jesus to be of primary significance. I spent 20 years in church without a true knowledge of Jesus. If we pursue the knowledge of Jesus, those things will be added unto us, and the Holy Spirit will give peace and clarity concerning the gifts.

The Scripture you are referring to (1 Corinthians 13:8) is a response to the first part of that section of the chapter which is verses 1-3 as follows from the New King James Version:

"1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. 2 And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. 3 And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing."

The 13th chapter of this book is about love and the power it holds and how important is to have it in our hearts. We also need to take a look at verse 9 & 10 which states: "9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part. 10 But when that which is perfect has come, then that which is in part will be done away."

When I read this, as a Christian, I know that Paul is referring to the second coming of Jesus when he says "when that which is perfect has come". When Jesus comes again to take us to Heaven with Him there will a transformation happen and our spiritual role will change.

I know personally that the Holy Spirit still manifests Himself through the gift of tongues for my husband is blessed with the gift. And I am blessed with the gift of prophecy. As long as we remain on this earth, God has a purpose for us to build his kingdom and the Holy Spirit is with us to help us do that. The Spiritual Gifts we are blessed with equip us to do so, along with the talents we should be developing while we are here.

I hope this wasn't too "long-winded" for you. If you want to discuss this further, you can email me at godsvip@yahoo.com.

Blessings!

Kathy

(You are on a roll, please continue) This time begin with chapter 12 note Paul's intention for writing, it is clearly laid out in the first sentence. He discusses the gifts and rates them in importance to love. You note here the last phrase of 12 leads into the main point of 13, note also ,if you will ,the integral part of the discussion here regarding gifts and specifically prophesy/knowledge. 13 is all about the supremacy of LOVE vs TONGUES and PROPHESY. Chapter 14 then continues on to rate prophesy over tongues and gives the reasons why. The reason why tongues and prophesy will end or be destrioyed is because we will die. thus bringing us to the next order of discussion, certainty of Christ's death and ressurection and the afterlife in chapter 15. In 16 he answers the Corinthians remaining concerns regarding the offering. Please check out the Message version, mine is paralled with the NIV. As for commentaries more than one school of thought is best . Good Bible exposition employs the same study techniques as those for other non-fiction historical literature, who was writing, from where , to whom, for what reason......If a verse doesn't seem clear on it's own, see the surrounding verses , then the chapter, then the surrounding chapters , and the book as a whole then in historical context. Beginning and ending in prayer ,putting aside if possible preconcieved ideas and simply reading the word for what it says and not trying to make it prove our own beliefs. Jesus as Savior is sweet, as teacher , he is the toughest and best. For this reason a lot of us stop with the Savior Jesus .

these gifts never cease....see we use tounges to speak to our heavenly father. Once you are saved the holy spirit lives inside of you and when you speak in tounges it allows you, the holy spirit, and god to speak. you never know what you are sayin but it is a prayer. well you said not to be long-winded so if you have anymore questions about this feel free to contact me.
