It does seem that the line between wealthy and poor is growing. Without taxing the rest of us even more, can the poor ever break out of poverty without hitting the lottery or something like that? Is it our responsiblity to even help them? We know most are there because they lack the ability and ambition to work harder and use money wisely but what is going to happen in 20 years when middle class becomes poverty? Oh what a mess we have in this country. This has been going on for decades so please...save the its all bushs' fault crap.

Its a parenting issue. Not enough parents in low-income families emphasize education and personal responsibility, and the kids don't thinks its important. So they drop out/flunk out, sell/abuse drugs, get knocked up, and start the cycle up all over again.

They can, but sometimes they need a little help. Most people born into poverty grow up to be poor. The only way to stop the cycle is through education and job training, like Clinton tried with his "welfare to work" program. The easiest (and most responsible) way to lift people out of poverty is to give them the training required to get a good paying job. I admit, there will always be those who abuse the system, but if you give them the opportunity to better their lives, the ones who don't jump at it will be easy to "weed out". It's not Bush's fault, although he hasn't done much to help, either.

Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, he eats for life. We should only be "giving a man a fish" while we are "teaching him to fish". Once he has the knowledge necessary to survive, no more handouts.

Yes, there a way out for poverty stricken people. Let's focus on
the third world situation. In my opinion the problem lies in the way that the approach has been funded. (governments and institutions
recieved the funds). I f the funding sources were in the hands of
the people it would multiply itself 10 times within a year, thereby raising the standard of living and the gnp of that country 10 fold.
on trickle down theory wealth is produced by the speed and the number of exchanges made.

You are a scam....If you were rich you wouldn't be putting down poor people.
I was born into to wealth and married a man who is richer than my Dad. Being rich doesn't impress me. It's easy to be rich and successful. Nothing to it. It's boring. being rich is expected not something you have to work hard toward.
Poor people who have the courage and detrmination to become successful. There are plenty of them. Now that is impressive. Helping and being a voice to our fellow human beings is our civic duty.
You lack the ability to be true to yourself.
With all due respect my friend...it's you who needs to get a grip. I don't care who you are but you sure seem to have a profound urge to insult people to feel a sense of self satisfaction..And you Definitely are not wealthy. But that is not something to be ashamed of or be bitter about. Have a nice day!

The only way that the poverty stricken people with overcome poverty is when they stop using things like SS, welfare and min wage as a way of life. When they start using them as the crutches they are supposed to be then they can work their way up. For crying out loud welfare doesn't just hand out money for food they also help in rec'ing financial aide for college. Take advantage of that and you are limitless.

It is education.... and you should give to a poor persons education just as you would for your private school brat. It is the responsibility of everyone to help them for the sake of humanity and compassion. People don't ask to be poor and I think its very stereotypical of you to say that we all lack ambition. I don't consider myself rich or middle class. I do consider myself a poor American and I especially don't see anything wrong with giving poor american students financial aid. Without it I wouldn't even be in college since my mother died. And for your information she was a hard working POOR woman but with DIGNITY HONOR AND RESPECT FOR OTHERS EVEN THE RICH. SOMETHING YOU OBVIOUSLY LACK.

they could if they wanted to, but they don't wanna get off their fat lazy @sses and actually get a job. but they figure why should they when hard working Americans are supporting them. its no ones fault but their own, there's no one to blame but themselves. you cant blame others for the choices you make in life.

education is the key...and NOT a liberal education...a working mans education...also..the gov't needs to start restricting a lot of giveaway programs to appease the poor...make them feel good about earning their money, even if it is min wage...its a start...
