There are several potential causes of excessive night sweats:-
1. Starting with the obvious - is your bedroom too hot, or are you wearing too many clothes in bed or do you have too many blankets on the bed? Sounds stupid I know but my wife habitually pulls the duvet right up to her nose at night and then wakes up complaining of being hot and sweating... duh!
2. Some foods make you hot. There is a phenomenon called the "thermic effect of food". Basically the effort you put into digesting food releases heat. Some foods cause this more than others. Try not to eat just before going to bed.
3. Some metabolic and hormonal problems may cause night sweats. As an example, women going through the menopause often suffer sudden changes in body temperature ("hot flushes") which are caused by sudden surges of hormones through the body. Some of the underlying causes of these hormonal problems might be quite serious - cancer, for example.
4. Infection. You may have an infection and not realise it. This may be quite serious depending on where the infection is. When I was studying Physiology at university we were given a case study of a guy suffering from night sweats and some chest pain who had developed an infection on one of his heart valves following a routine dental extraction - the infection ate right through his heart valve and he died of heart failure!
5. And yes, one of the other answers is right - some medications can cause night sweats as well.
I suffered weeks of night sweats when I developed pleurisy (an infection of the membrane that surrounds the lungs) about 20 years ago. I used to wake up soaked to the skin every night - it was truly awful.
The best advice is to get to your doctor and let him find out what your problem is!

Some perscription medicines can do it. Diabities can do it. Pain can do it. High blood pressure can do it.
See your doctor if it keeps up.
