Technically, I have a car and I paid for it really. Although, my mom GAVE or MATCHED a 1000 dollars. But now that we are falling through... I don't want to be around her house anymore and all I need is to finally (been 3 yrs. this hag has slowed me down) upgrade to a provisional license and then leave. Still I need to know what I need to do to actually possess the car in full under my sole name. Thx

I'm assuming that the car is titled in her name, correct? Then she'll need to sign the title over to you. If she refuses to do so, then there is NO way for you to get title in your name.

Some d00b is probably going to tell you to go to the DMV and apply for a lost title or an abandoned title. Ignore them!

You can't get a lost title since it's not in your name; they'll mail it to your mother as her name is on the title.

You can't get an abandoned title either because the first thing that the DMV does when you apply for an abandoned title is contact the legal owner (your mother) and ask if they still have a legal interest in the vehicle. When she says "yes" they'll deny your application.

If you just take off with the vehicle, all she needs to do is to report it stolen. The cops will arrest you for GTA and send the car back to her.

So, if you want this car in your name, you're going to have to be extra nice to "the old hag" so that when you ask her to sign the title over to you she does it. If she refuses, there's nothing that you can do. Move out and buy yourself your own car; that's about it.

If the "hag" is on the title, she will have to sign it over to you. If she is willing, she can gift it to you. If you do not have a license (you are talking about "upgrading" to a provisional license, so I assume to just have a permit), you will obviously need one. If you have been driving the car under her car insurance, you will have to obtain your own insurance. You will find that it is VERY expensive, since you are a young person without much driving history.

Since you need your mother's cooperation in order to achieve the title transfer, I'd suggest you practice being really nice. Information on Maryland title transfers is available at the link below. Good luck!
