As a former smoker, let me tell you, the more you preach the more stubborn he'll become. All you can do is calmly and without an accusing or parental tone, explain why it means so much to you and the family to have him stop. He knows the health risks as well as you do....they're printed on every pack for corn's sake! After 30 years, though it isn't likely he'll stop. Making him sign something is denigrating and silly. He isn't a child and was a grown man before you were born.
Not only that but you can get cancer from plastic!! It contains organochorides, which build up in your system and never bio-degrade....so what are a few cigarettes....plus, a pack a day isn't that bad....my dad used to smoke 4 a day! You could try to talk him into a compromise like smoking 1/2 a pack or switching to ultra-lights. Sunflower seeds helped me.

Being a smoker, nagging doesn't work. I am trying to quit now but it is not a very easy thing to do. I suggest you find some kind of substitute for the cigarette itself. Personally I put a used cigarette filter in a shortened straw and suck on that rather than the cigarette itself. Then I added gum or something else to keep the mouth busy. If necessary, give him some carrot sticks and other veggies to eat but gum is the best thing if he can stand it. He will have to use it with the straw though or it won't work. In addition, cutting him down that rapidly will not help him. You have to work on one at a time until he is comfortable with that one, then take another one away, like one smoke a week or so, depending on how he responds. Good luck!!

Your intentions are good, but remember that there is the issue of age at work. By that I mean because he is older than you, you owe him respect.

He knows all about the dangers of smoking; I'm sure he has had some talks with his doctor about it. If you make up charts and plans for him, that's the same as telling him that you know better than he does. He'll find it intrusive, rude and presumptuous.

What I'm suggesting is, leave it alone. Show a little respect, and let him make his own decisions.

And, think of this if you ever say, "Get out of my face! I'm an adult, I'll do whatever I want! Leave me alone! I'm not stupid, you know!"

Best wishes!

Gosh,i was so moved by your obvious love for your grandpa,i just wanted to reply.
I have never smoked,so cant help much, but i worry that he has had a huge cancer scare, and it didnt stop him.I think personally you have an uphill battle but i say go for it,tell him you love him and you want him around for many years to come, and the next scare may be real.
As someone who has had cancer myself,i truly understand the fears of family for their loved ones. The very best of luck,i think if he loved you he would sign a pledge, but he will fight it if its too rigid. take care.:):):):)

First see if he will do it. What I would do is take one smoke out of his packet everyday for a week. Then the next week I would take 2 out and so on.
It dosen't always work just so you know.

he definitely should quit, but have him talk to his doctor and remind him that you want him in his life for as long as possible. For oral cravings have him suck hard candy, chew on toothpicks or gum. Give him a stress ball. Just remind him how much he means to you. But he has already damaged his lungs for good so have him talk to his doc to see how much damage there is and how help him get healthier.
