I know that Islam says that there are not to be any sects of the religion. However, there are many people who do follow either Sunni or Shia sects. Does it really matter then if I choose not to follow that and just follow what the Quran and the Sunnah says? Any opinions?

Well, both Shias and Sunnis claim to follow the one Holy Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The Shias follow the Sunnah mainly through narrations from his (SAW) Ahlul-Bayt (family) where as the Sunnis mainly follow what they consider to be Sahaba (companions). Majority of the hadith are similar if not identical, just little differences here and there; mostly it is political differences. There are books that can assist you further including Pashawar Nights (a dialog between Shia and Sunni scholars, Ask Those Who Know by Tijani a Sunni scholar who converted to the Shia school of thought, The Right Path, a dialog between a Shia scholar and the official head of al-Azhar University in which Egypt officially accepted Shias to be the fifth madhab (accepted school of thought) through a fatwa. Note, there is a prophesy in the Bible in genesis ~And from the seed of Ishmael, a great nation will I create, and 12 righteous descendants will I give. (Shias accept the 12 righteous descendants which Prophet Muhammad (SAW) actually had).

You can not understand The Holy Quran yourself. It requires a lot of explanation otherwise you will get some wrong meanings like Al-Qaeda and other extremist Moslims.
But there are slight differences in the explanations of Quran which creates the difference of sects. But it does not mean that Moslims have been broken. They are still united.Such slight differences make nothing much disagreeable. You should understand and study each sect thoroughly and then you can choose any sect you like.Your opinion is also right but I don't think that Quran is much easy to be learned without any guidline.
But do what you think is better for you.

Allah says in the Quran, "Hold fast to the rope of Allah and be not divided amongst yourselves". Which is the rope of Allah? Holy Quran is the rope of Allah. Allah commands you to obey the instructions of the Holy Quran. There is nothing like Sunni and Shia in Islam. If you are a Muslim, follow the Quran and Sahih Hadith. The words Sunni and Shia are nowhere to be found in the Holy Quran. Who was our Holy Prophet (pbuh). Was he Sunni, Shia, Brahlvi, Shafi?? Who was he? He was a MUSLIM.

No, it doesn't really matter which sect of Mohammedanism you follow. Even though some are vastly different-they will all burn in hell.
