To "Die to one's self" is to give up one's purely earthly pursuits in exchange for Spiritual pursuits. When we live, for ourselves, we are following our wants, and defining what's right and wrong by our own standards.

When such a person decides to "die to one's self", that person is deciding to dismiss their earthly pursuits in exchange for Spiritual. This puts one's will in sync with God's. This person is also using God's definition of right and wrong in their lives as well.

The reason for all this is that when we insist on our own pursuits, we are merely accumulating treasure on Earth. Those who "die to themselves" and live according to God's standards, stock up treasure in Heaven.

Why is treasure in Heaven so important? Well, when you die, you can't take your earthly treasure with you. Those who have "died to themselves" will have plenty of treasure waiting for them in the afterlife.

Digilook,
If we wish to enter into a relationship with the Eternal, we must cease to think as mortals. Mortals view the universe from the ego-centric perspective. Because we are encased in these bodies of flesh, everything we think we know about life and the universe is pretty much wrong. the bible talks about the path of the flesh, and the path of the Spirit, and how they are at war with each other. Those who truly wish to walk the path of the Spirit, must crucify, so to speak the mortal attitude. No longer must we be concerned with our continued material existence and well being. When you understand that your destiny flows from your mental attitude, then you begin to live within the realm of the mind. It is here that all of our choices come from. When our thoughts are right, our experience will be good. When out thoughts are wrong, our experience will also be difficult. Our spiritual life must be based on Eternal values. We call these values the Will of God. Only the Eternal knows what things are of lasting value. Love, Wisdom, Peace. The mortal ego sees these things as threats, and flees from them. Thus if we are to walk according to the Spirit, and not the flesh, the ego must go to the cross, never to be resurrected.

To me, the idea is twofold.

First, it means to shed the preoccupation with the physical "me". It means to understand that our lives are comprised of more than what we can see, smell, taste, touch, and hear. To die to self is to cease obssessing over material things, to stop worrying about possessions and status and all the human inventions which drive us so crazy.

It also means, to me, to give up preoccupation with any part of myself. It means to know that there is something out there bigger and more important than me. It is the ideal that makes me strive for social justice and a deeper spirituality, that I am serving a far greater purpose than merely my own survival needs.

It means to put the needs of others above the needs of self. It puts you in a caring state of mind, so that your goal is to serve others and help them find God rather than to merely find new and novel ways of satisfying ones own palate.

To die to oneself is to put your personal needs and wants lower than something else that is more important to you. From a Christian perspective, this means to suppress your own desires and allow Christ to be the driving force of all you do.

dying to self means daily doing Gods will and not your own. Example, I love to dance, drink, and do karaoke. I dont go to the bars, anymore. My self begs me to go, but i dont, therefore i am dying to that part of me.

What does it accomplish? it helps me get closer to God and brings spiritual blessings into my life, heart

when you say that it means i will live this day or whenever for God and not for myself

It is no longer i who live but christ lives in me, and the life i now live in hte flesh, I live by FAITH in the son of God who LOVED me and gave his life for ME!! Galations 2:20

so basically its sayin that you need to 4get about what people will think or w/e and go and live for christ because Jesus loves you and he died for you so thats the least you could do for him
