I feel guilty throwing it in the garbage because the majority of it is made of paper that could be recycled. However the cover is plastic and its spiral bound so I don't know if I should recycle it.

Cut off the spiral binding and remove the covers and then recycle the paper within.

First, in the academic planner is there confidential information? Aside from that how about shredding by pulling out the pages and shredding them numbers at a time. I know its tidious but the recycler will thank you.

just recycle the paper and throw the binding & cover in the trash
