The whole point behind religion is that one must believe that God has specially chosen one for some amazing and wonderful purpose and that all others, who don't believe in the same God (or any god at all), are excluded from this purpose. Religion is divisive, not unifying. It separates people into opposing groups who worship different gods, or who worship the same god in different ways, and makes them enemies. Most of the time, they simply agree to disagree and leave it at that, but other times, they will go to war with each other to defend their god and prove how special they are.
Even within those religions, there are subdivisions, and those divisions may have more divisions, still! Christianity is the best example of this. It is divided into two main groups, Catholicism and Protestantism (although some claim no affiliation with either), and those are further divided into roughly 34,000 denominations who cannot agree on a single doctrine. Is it any wonder there are so many problems with religious intolerance in the world?

As a pagan, I see it as a sign of ignorance. If most people took time to read up on most religions, they are mostly the same with small differences.

Because every religion teaches that they're religion is the ONLY way and that people who truly believe it should work on converting everyone to what they then believe is the ONLY way. They then consider other religions to be lies. This is what I've learned from my observations, at least.

Its very telling that you didn't mention christians or muslims in your parenthesis. its because certain religious doctrines say you either believe what we do or you're wrong. and some go so far as to condemn other sects for not being born again or the same brand that theirs is. AS for muslims if you dont believe as they do they kill you for it because they assume you are evil.

Fear of the unknown. They don't understand it, so they write it off as heinous and evil and just plain wrong.
