It is polite to leave the room to talk on the phone. It would be rude to just get up and walk out without saying "excuse me."

It's always rude to leave the phone while talking on the phone. What is not rude is to leave a room where others are watching TV while you talk on the phone.

I think you're right. When I'm in a public setting, I always try to retreat to an area where my phone conversation won't bother others.
I DO think it's rude, however, to make an unnecessary call when you're in the company of others. I recieve calls most of the time, but I never call another friend when I'm hanging out with friends already. I also try to cut recieved calls short so I don't neglect those who already had my attention.
I have a friend who often talks with another friend on the phone when she and I are in the car. This is one of my biggest annoyances. I cannot avoid 'eavesdropping', which is uncomfortable, and I feel like my conversation isn't good enough for her.
Bottom line on phones: just make sure that you don't kick your friends to the side as soon as you get a call.

My husband always talks on the phone in the same room when I am watching tv. It is really annoying, as he talks so loudly, I can't hear what is going on on telly. He doesn't have to be there and I think it's rude of him to do that. We have a cordless phone, so he is free to move to any other room in the house. Sometimes I tell him to go elsewhere or I just turn the tv up, he soon gets the hint.

This only for when whoever told you that it is rude is in the room, don't do it all the time.
Stay in the room and tell everyone "Can you keep it down? I'm on the phone!!!". Say it real snotty and loud. When you're done, aske that person if he/she would rather you leave the room to make your call the next time.

It is not rude to leave the room when making or receiving a phone call. It is rude of the person with the phone to subject those in the room to their conversation while they are otherwise occupied.

I think it's rude NOT to leave the room when placing a call. It annoys me when I have to listen to one end of a phone conversation while I'm trying to listen to something else - be it music, the TV, or another person speaking. I say leave the room - you won't have to shout to be heard and won't have to ask the caller to repeat themselves, and everyone else will be able to get on without you just fine.

If you leave the room to "Place" a call. That is rude to leave the people you are with to talk to someone else.
If the phone rings while you have company, it is better to ask the caller if you can return their call and continue to give your company your attention.
If the phone rings while you have company, and the call cannot wait to be returned it would be rude to stay in the room.

You are right because I feel that your phone conversation should be your own and feel that it is rude that anyone would want you to stay so they could hear your conversation. Next time, say excuse me I am taking this call in the next room and if they can't respect your politeness in excusing yourself, then they don't know too much about proper phone etiquette.

I'd be more annoyed if I was watching an interesting show and I couldn't hear it because someone was on the phone. You're only being polite by leaving the room.
