I'm surprised the ford tech didn't know about the cover that goes over the button on the right of the shift handle.. It will get you in gear one time (putting back in park, will force you to have to push it again)..but bring it to the ford dealer as the shift interlock solenoid is probably bad, and you will need a new shifter (even if you can get the solenoid, recommend the new revised shifter (the new one is the same shifter on a 05 focus)

I assume you are pressing on the brake while trying to shift?
It sounds like the safetly lock is not disengaging. This could be a problem with wiring or possibly a switch that is not working correctly. I doubt very much that it is a transmission problem. I know that taking the cover off of your steering column is intentionally very difficult to prevent your car from being stolen, so you may have to take it to a dealer.

First thing is check all fuses, if the brake lights are not working then its a fuse or the brake light switch. You should be able to turn the key just a little and pull it in gear. I think you can do that on that car, there should be a place to push a pick in and be able to get it out of park if it doesn't, All Fords have a way to get them out of park in case or emergence's, it should say in the owners manual.

Look down at your shifter console and you should see a little square looking cut out, pop this out with a very small flat head screwdriver and under it is your manual lock overide switch. Try this and then put it back into park and try to shift it back into drive without using the overide switch, if it still won't shift on its own then take it to you Ford dealer.

Either brake light switch is no good; brake light circuit fuse is blown; shift interlock solenoid no good or out of adjustment; or shift interlock cable broken or out of adjustment. Step on brake pedal, run back to rear of vehicle and see if you have brake lights (or have someone else check). No brake lights? Check brake light circuit fuse and brake light switch. Read repair manual to understand shift interlock system troubleshooting and repair. Worse case scenario, take it to a dealer and have it fixed or trade it in...after all, it is a Ford!

Make sure your brake lights work, because the sol. for the shift moves when the brakes are pressed.

if u are parked against a curb, you might have to jerk on the wheel really hard to get it out of park, check brake lights.
