If you formatted the drive, getting back a missing file may be next to impossible. A good Data REcovery company may be able to be some of it back, but you're talking major Bucks.

First DO NOT USE THAT DRIVE ANYMORE.
Try http://www.grc.com/intro.htm "SpinRight6" first for data recovery.

Formatting does not erase files as most people believe, but as you use that drive the place where the old files are are being over written and then can never be retrieved.

It's best to take that drive (or computer) to a shop that can do a forensic scan on it. I have never done one because it takes special equipment so I don't know what they would charge.
They can get everything of that hard drive that was there before the format. REMEMBER if you use that drive the older data is being overwritten and forever lost.

If these are very important home movies it might be worth the cost and a valuable lesson to ALWAYS keep backups of important data.

Did you actually reformat when you installed the new OS? Or did you just overwrite the old OS. If you reformatted, you may be out of luck. There are programs out there for recovering lost files (you'll have to do a search, the titles escape me currently), but these force you to look through thousands of unnamed files before you can find what you need.

There are also data recovery centers-- but these are expensive (in the thousands). So unless you REALLY need that file...

If you didn't reformat though, it'll still be on your hard drive somewhere. Good luck!
