maples like moisture(which is rare in a parking lot island), and dislike the heat bouncing off the concrete/asphalt of the parking lot due to thin bark. A parking lot island is no place for a tree, but look into honey locust if they grow in your zone.

Maple trees are very hardy and need little water once established. They are available in red and green. They don't grow very fast when water is not available, but when fully grown they provide great shade.
