I met a guy thru online personals. He says he's a private pilot AND that he was in the US Marine Reserves or Guard and flew COBRA helicopters. I am starting to think maybe he's lying, but I don't know. Is there a site with FAA or other that at least lists names and if possible addresses for NY pilot? Thank you very much.

Pilot's licenses (Airman's Certificates, actually) are issued by the FAA, not the states.

The FAA does not release personal information on pilots for security and privacy reasons.

If he is a military pilot, he does NOT need and may well not have an FAA certificate. Since he claims to have a Private ticket, just ask him to show it to you.

But, all of this goes to a bigger issue. Something is setting off warning bells in your head regarding this guy. Normally when our guts tell us this, we should listen!

If you're really concerned about this character, there are sites where you can run a pretty comprehensive background check on him. Prices are typically $50.00 - $300.00, depeding on the scope of the investigation. How much is your personal safety and peace of mind worth to you?

BTW, if he's a straight-up guy, he won't mind that you ran a background check! My g/f ran one on me when we first started dating. I was a bit flattered, and impressed with her desire to protect herself and her family.

Take it from an Army Aviator, this guy is full of it. The Marines fly Cobras, but he would have to be an Officer in the Aviation Branch. The Guard does not fly Cobras. If he has an FAA Private License, have him send you a copy. It will show his type rating.
Again, there is no such thing as a New York Pilot license. Also the Marine Corps Aviation Association will list him if he is a Marine Pilot.

There is not such thing as a NY pilot license. The Federal Aviation Administration issues pilot certificates. Notice the word certificate. If he is a private pilot, he has a certificate issued by the federal government.

That being said, yes, there is a site that lists names and addresses (I have no idea why people are saying the FAA doesn't release that information - are these people even pilots?). I'm not going to list it, however, because I think it's a wrong to look up someone's address like that. How would you feel if someone online got YOUR address like that?

go to landings.com look for FAA search data bases pilot certificates you can search by name and state you may see several certificates under the same name but you can usually figure out who you are looking for by age. They are not issued by state the FAA regional office where the pilot takes his check ride applies for application on behalf of the airman with Oklahoma FAA . All certificates of pilots with current medical certificates will be listed. The list is updated approx. every six months. True if he does not have a civilian certificate he won't be in the data base.

The FAA does not release pilots names. The FAA protects pilots in order that they are safe from blackmail.
Look him up through the marines, or just go online and get his police record. it would state military service.

Just go to FAA on the internet and follow the instructions. Also, you can call the FAA - look it up in the phone book under US Government.

If he doesn't have a civilian license, he won't be in the online database- http://www.landings.com/_landings/pages/search/certs-pilot.html
or here-
http://www.faa.gov/licenses_certificates/airmen_certification/interactive_airmen_inquiry/

Also, civilian pilots have the option of having their names and addresses removed from any public list for privacy reasons.

As far as military aviator certification goes, there is no publicly searchable databse for military aviators.

....and true, there is no "NY pilots license". Unlike drivers licenses, it isn't issued by states but the governemtn.
