One generally comes out to society at a ball thrown by a charitable organization one's parents are involved with, and following the ball one might have a private party with friends. You have to be invited to the ball and pay for your own party. Hopefully this helps! Go badger your parents into joining the Junior Symphony League or somesuch.

MIssy D is absolutely correct. I am from southern Mississippi, antebellum homes and old money. You can't just make yourself a debutante unless you are doing it at Chucky Cheese. Your mom/dad have to be members of "societal" clubs and you have to be wealthy, usually from what we call "old" money, or your great grandparents/great great grandparents and further on have lived in that town and established the wealth passed down to your family.

It could be possible that you are part of old money and society as I see you are from Richmond. Check with your parents, they will know if you qualify.

One more thing, the tab is all yours, every expense and it is by invitation ONLY since you are paying the tab you want only your closest friends on hand to celebrate.

a debutante comes from a well to do family. you don't just become one, you're born one. there are however, the nouveau riche, a french term meaning "new rich" people that have new money, can usually be coined as being a debutante.

In southern states such as you live in, it is traditionally a roll of the father and his society memberships (clubs, society, fraternal) to present his daughter, or debut, her at proper age to society. You have been given some good responses such as ask your friends for they are able to invite friends to their balls--but not as a deb. Your parents pay for your debut just like your wedding--in fact it is the white dress, purity, symbols that we use in modern weddings that you see first in this setting. There are exceptions, your grandparents may present you, your stepfather, or in smaller towns some of the young women are selected by a board to present the best the town has to offer. Talk to your parents, talk to your friends, and read your society page. You may have an aunt or relative whose society would present you. First and foremost, in the long run, remember who you are and that whether you debut in Palm Beach or in a Holiday Inn or not at all, it is who you are as an adult that matters in the long run and not who Dad was. If you are of deb age I am old enough to be your Mom and of my 6 best friends, only 2 of us had a formal presentation and ball, and we all would be considered to most to be successful, etc. Good Luck!

Ask your friends? They have a couples club in our area that chooses who will be presented. They are all Presbyterians and belong to the same church.
