Vista is a memory hog. Beta testers have said you need at least 1GB RAM for a smooth operation. Also, the Vista takes up to 10GB of hard drive space. So you're looking at a laptop that will probably cost over $1500 to make full use of Vista.

Add to that the uncertainty of how Vista will work in the real world with real users, not testers. Remember what happened with XP? After it was out for a while Microsoft had to bring out SP1 to correct some serious problems. Not too much later they came out with SP2, the largest after-production correction ever seen. I'll bet Vista's SP1 will be bigger than XP's SP2!!

So get a laptop with XP so you can use it now, and not have to wait another 2 years for a stable Vista.

I would say this depends on what you're doing and when you need the notebook. Windows XP is available now, while Windows Vista will be available.... sometime. MS keeps pushing it back, so it's an unknown at this point.

If you have the money, you can always buy a laptop with XP now and then purchase a Windows Vista upgrade license later and install Vista. That would end up costing a little bit more, though.

I would not wait for Vista. It's gonna be BROKEN like all initial releases of Microsoft Software. Vista will probably just start getting good in about two years. Don't be a Vista Victim.

If you need the notebook, get it NOW. I recommend a Toshiba. Look at Costco or Wal-Mart. That is where the best deal is. You want to SEE what you are buying, so you want to see it in the store. Also ASK about the return policy.

Be careful with your new notebook. It is the NUMBER ONE stolen item in America. Drug users turn them in to CASH.

If you are not in a hurry, you will save money by waiting to buy a laptop with Vista. Only problem is a new program like Vista probably does not have all unforseen bugs worked out, but it is good about updating.
