Never surfed the Jersey shore so I can't give you specifics on that spot.
In general, when you see a wave coming turn around and start paddling hard.
When the wave starts to get steep (jack) push the nose of the board down the face of the wave. Usually done by pushing down on the board with your chest. Take an extra stroke or two once you think you have the wave. A lot of beginners make the mistake of trying to get up before they are actually moving.
Once you start to go, you need to chose right or left. Go away from the breaking lip of the wave. If you go straight down the wave you'll end up diving into the bottom (goin pearl, named because you go straight to the bottom like a pearl diver).
When you get up, go straight to your feet. Don't try to get on your knees and then to your feet or you'll never get up. Keep your knees bent and weight centered over the board. Remember to board is moving when you get up so you will need to keep your weight moving forward. Stand up facing sideways with you feet apart. If you stand up with your feet together you're going over.
Most important, when you wipe out (everyone does) don't panic. Just stay calm, hold your breath, and wait for the wave to let you back up. It may seem like you're being held down for a long time but its really only a few seconds.
There are also rules for etiquette in the line up. Check out the link below for more pointers.

Don't take off on people
Be nice to everybody
Smile a lot
If you are beginning, avoid the tendency to paddle from too far back on your board, you need to be pretty far forward to get the nose to sink in when you are catching a wave, but pull back and weight back if it starts to pearl. Do not let it pearl, ever, that is very bad.
