I truely hope this is not the only research you are doing before you adopt a dog. I suggest taking the time to go to your local humane society and get info on all the basics of dogs. They can help you with any ?s you may have. As far as what kind of dog to get??? Talk to a million people and you'll get a million different answers. Dogs are individuals, but thier breed gives you a relatively good idea of what general characteristics you will find. If the traits you are looking for are purely cosmetic then just look at the dog! If it has long hair, it sheds long hair. If it has short hair it will shed short hair. But you can go with a poodle or bishon frise which have hair more like ours. Some of these type of breeds are also non-allergenic, but most need regular "haircuts" grooming. As far as how long they will live... Most breeds will live at least ten years. There are some that tend not to such as boxers and great danes.
So you see there are all kinds of dogs to fit all kinds of humans. Just take your time, ask questions everywhere, read, and learn as much as possible about dogs so you can provide a safe and happy home. Once you have a breed you think you want call a reputable breeder or two and ask them a million questions. You will get a lot of great breed related info that way and usually the breeder will help you to decide if thier breed is the best one to fit in your life style.
Good luck and I hope you enjoy many years as a responsible doggie owner.

You could try a Miniature Pinscher. They have really short hair, and are O.K. with staying inside for a while as long as they get to use the restroom. They normally live about 18-20 years, and will actually catch and kill vermin. Be aware though, if you live where it is cold, you may have to be careful how much you let it out, as their short hair is not much protection from the cold. If you want a dog that is on the larger size, you could try a standard-sized poodle. I don't know how long they live though, and I don't think they'll shed badly, but you have to be careful to keep their hair trimmed. I know someone who owned a poodle and they didn't know to keep the hair trimmed, and it died because it couldn't use the restroom. You could also try a bulldog, they have short hair. If none of these are working for you, check out http://www.canismajor.com/dog/chbreed.html .

Why would you want a dog if it has to stay outside most of the time? Dogs are social animals that hate to be alone and they will dig, howl and bark until your neighbors get really pissed off. A dog should be a member of your family, not an object to be left outside like an old car.

I would recommend somehing like jack russell terrier if you like a playful dog. However shedding can be constant, no dog only sheds once a week. They naturally lose their hair over time, especially during the summer months.

Go to your local rescue group or shelter and adopt a medium sized mixed breed dog.

you can never keep a dog like this. this'll be too rude for the dog, specially for labs and such other lovable ones.
the dog will be more agrressive and can cause you harm anytime.
also, if he's kept outside home, he'll carry ticks alognwith him and will catch severe fever and cold which is sometimes uncurable.
specially, he'll catch skin diseases and itching which is just not curable.
then your dog will die of nothing.

American Pit Bull Terrier. That's the best dog anyone can get, they really give meaning to the whole "man's best friend" saying. Just get one from a reputable breeder and treat it good.
