Relaxation is very good for you however there are mantras for meditation. It is all about focusing totally on God and getting to know Him better.

The right way is to make the body very still, then the mind - allow thoughts to come in if they want, but let them pass away again. The best way is to be initiated with a mantra on which you can focus the mind - the more you become experienced in meditation, the more the mantra will be of importance and you will need guidance as to what mantra is appropriate for you. However, at the initial stages of meditation a mantra is to be seen as pole which allows the monkey (mind) to run up and down and keep it occupied - because this allows the peace to flow into the being. So at first the mantra is not that important but later as your meditation develops the mantra will become more important and can aid the meditation further, because the mantra itself has its own powers.
all the best.

There are some very good Guided Meditations around in any Mind, Body and Spirit shop. Also there are some very good ones available online. I find that Belief.net are very good ones.
Make sure you are in a quiet space, unplug the phone, put up a do not disturb sign (if needed) and get yourself comfortable. (This may be lying down, sitting in a chair, sitting cross legged. Whatever way you feel you could stay for about half an hour)
Above all - Enjoy!

There are many meditation methods - starting from concentrating on breathing process, Watching a candle light to some yoga meditation methods that I personally wouldn't dream of doing. It all depends on what you want to achieve at the end of the meditation process. I cannot give you web sites off hand - may be if you are interested, I can give you a few links and put you through to people who posses excellent knowledge on the methods.

My two cents:
a) Meditation is power of human mind. It is totally independent of what religion you belong to.
b) Meditation is all about getting into thoughtlessness. Follow any scheme of focus that allows you to enhance your concentration, control your thoughts and settle your mind on one thought, practice with discipline and it will work.
c) It is extremely helpful to have discipline life and regularity when practicing meditation. Meditation is not like a physical capability building that can be accomplished with just hard work. Meditation brings lot of power in mind and hence to effectively develop it, one needs the prepare oneself at grass root level though proper control on habits, thoughts, nature and self-discipline.
d) Best way I could make it work is to fix a time slot early in the morning, spend 20-30 min in isolate and peaceful place and just focus my thoughts on my favorite GOD. That works.

Here are two sites that you might find helpful. One is on ujjayi breathing (long deep breaths; a great way to start meditating) and another is on heart rhythm meditation, which I'm currently taking a seminar on.
Also, you might check out a local yoga class for the meditative aspect.

There is no "right way", meditation can be used to relax, or as in some pagan rituals a preporation before a ritual or spell. Find a way that works best with what you are meditating for, be it relaxation, a pagan ritual, or otherwise.

Depends on what you see in meditation.
I'd say to have a teacher that can see you, that can check you and decide based on experience, what's the best way for you personally.

The proper way to meditate is first to understand who you are, who God is and what your purpose in life is supposed to be.
There are many offering all kinds of meditation, prayers, charms, mantras etc but unless you truly understand who you are and what you really should expect out of meditation then you may at bestm, get ripped off, or something worse could happen.
The Bhagavad-Gita explains who you are - an eternal spiritual soul inhabiting a material body. It explains who God is - a spiritual entity who is in everything from the largest creature to the smallest atom. The Gita explains that you are lost in this material world trying to enjoy life separately from God and you need to return to God to experience true happiness. The Gita explains that one cannot have any true and lasting happiness in this material world - every happiness comes with some distress.
The Gita explains the true purpose of meditation - to commune with God - it is not like some who teach you to focus on nothingness or your breath etc - you are meant to focus on God - God who is in your heart.
The Gita teaches you that the mind is extremely difficult to control even for the highly learned people - therefore to try and subdue the mind to focus on nothing or to try and empty it is futile unless you are getting help from God. Try to sit in isolation and silently and notice how your brain comes up with a multitude of thoughts without you even trying anything - proves the point that you cannot empty your mind as some claim.
You cannot give up any desires without understanding the true purpose of giving up and what can and cannot be given up - unlike some who say you have to become desireless or renounce everything.
The purpose of meditation is focus on God and to slowly tune yourself to hear what God is trying to tell you.

In case you're interested in Christian meditation, the bible talks a lot about it. Generally, it includes meditating on specific scripture passages or ideas discussed in the bible.
