Article I of the Armed Forces Code of Conduct states "I will never surrender of my own free will." That is covered in basic training for all branches of the military service. As for enemies surrendering, the Geneva Convention recognizes the use of a white flag as a symbol of truce. Anything beyond that is a judgment call. If an unarmed man speaking Arabic approaches a cadre of Marines with his hands in the air, that's a pretty good indicator that he's surrendering (but it's not absolute -- the Marines can shoot him dead if they see bombs or grenades strapped to his body).

Historically - the best way to surrender is to do so as a group. (The other guys tend to be calmer if nobody is shooting at them.)

The worst time to attempt to surrender is during an intense firefight.

However - since WWII there has been no benefit to a US soldier in surrendering. Sadly, we are expected to obey all the laws of war even though we get none of the protections.

Show whoever you are surrendering to that you are unarmed and that you are not willing to engage anymore in armed combat. This includes holding your hands up or restraining them, kneeling, squatting...anything that will show that you are unarmed or not gonna do anything anymore against your captors.
Seriously though I would never surrender to any captor if I still have the means to fight effectively (if you still have a gun with ammo, a grenade, a hand-gun with ammo or if you are plain resourceful...).
