Ok,a flying kite is about $15000 after everything. Since the main cost is the engine, it will be at least $4000. The frame will be of high tensile strength 2024 aluminum pipes and rods, which are as expensive as sheet and angle aluminum.

Because of the price, it is actually just as affordable to build a full feature ultralight. About $5000 for the body of the plane, or microlight if youre into that kind of thing.

The "hummel bird" is a great little bird with a full bubble canopy and aluminum/steel construction. It requires only 40hp, which gives it a cruise of about 100mph. A brand new 40hp rotary engine is about $5000. I would suggest a 4 stroke, since 2 strokes must be cleaned every few hours because of relaibility concerns.

All ultralight/microlights take several hundred hours to comlete. it should take a full year to build, so you might want to take some cessna flights every other week to get a hang of it.

Nothing.

You could build a microlight from recyclable materials. You could power the engine with a rubber band (OK not 1, lots of them).

It has ben done.

The cost of most new single-seat ultralights begins around $9,000. On the used market, it is possible to find an ultralight for around $4,000. Building your own costs about the same.
