Wow! Anybody ever hear of metaphors? We can count each line, literally and explain how the wall/fence keeps falling down and that a fence cordons us off from each other, but metaphorically speaking, this poem is much deeper. It's about The Psyche of people. If we all stay on our own sides of the fences, we will have no problems. The apple tree and the pine tree will not get together and produce pineapples! But in reality, the trees, I think, represent the emotions of people. Of course we're safe on our own sides of the fences. People can work together to mend the fence that natural things or emotions knock down, and working together is a good thing, but the writer is questioning, "Why can't the pine cones and the apples mix? Why must people mark off the territory of their minds and emotions? WHY CAN'T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG? Personally, I could answer him by telling him that all apples aren't good apples and some rotten apples would be out to spoil the whole bunch...or, all people will not treat all other people fairly. That's my opinion, and I'm sticking to it!

Yes, It generally means that when everyone knows where the boundaries are they can focus on friendship without having to worry about stepping out of line. This is the figurative meaning from the poem.

Yes, I know the poem. Literally, no, but figuratively yes. For neighbors/friends, I think it's important to break down boundaries and help each other out. But, in life, I think most people operate better when they know the boundaries (e.g. what are your responsibilities at work vs. your co-workers?)
