actually, i could care less about the rest of the world, why do you feel the need to stereotype americans?

Yet another question which immediately raises stereotypes. (Then again I guess we are all guilty of this at one point in time or another...)
I am not American, honestly, but where did you get the idea that the USA wants to rule the world?. In terms of McDonalds and Donald Trumps I guess you can make a case for the question...then again China is trying to do the same using cheap stuffed panda bears, ballpens and shoes. If this happens to be another anti-Iraq war question then perhaps if you just localized your subject to Bush and/or Cheney. then I may be open to suggestion. But to say that all USA people have this sort of manifest destiny is both absurd and insulting to the common American. Many of the Americans I've met and seen are just concerned with a decent or happy life like most any other nation's ordinary citizens. And besides there are others out there who really want to rule the world (Al-Qaida is an example), and the kind of world they would enforce is not the kind you will want.

Every empire lives on the neighboring country's that are paying its life stile, or are punished thru military interventions.
That is the stile of empire living since ancient Assyrians Babylonians, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Germans, Brits, and now Americans.
Flows of food ,fuel , luxury, slaves always go into the empire.
In roman empire there was a saying : All roads go to Rome.
Today it is all the money flows to Wall Street.
They want to keep the standard of living, have all consumer goods, live freely, but without thinking about consequences, or the real costs of all luxury. They want the constant flow of necessary things that gives them now all that makes America the biggest market in the world,...
So they assure the flow with military power , and so they try to rule the parts of the world that can not strike significantly back and that no one else rules.
I have not seen will to fight Chinese or Russian or Indians, or for the moment Iranians and Koreans, but they strike when they can where they can.

Some of the answers here make my blood boil. The tool-box who said "However we don't want other nations coming over here and killing our citizens.".
How many Iraqi's were involved directly or in-directly in 9/11 ?? I will tell you. NONE. I will say it again. NONE you total tool-box. Your own C.I.A (the 'I' bit is a laugh) even admitted that. So to take your argument on further...if a Spanish man is caught with explosives in New York...do you invade Spain and make it the law-less sh*t-heap that Iraq is now? Grow up. Also for those who said "we don't care about the rest of the world"......then leave us alone and go home. We are all on a tiny planet and if you don't "care" about the rest of the world then good riddance to you. We need to live together so taking an interest in what is outside your state-line should be important don't you think?

They don't want to rule the world. They just want everybody to listen. Like those mad teachers from way back when corporal punishment was still legal.

The politicians in power that is. Real Americans couldn't care less about the rest of the world.

Your question is more of a statement than a question. "Do" would be the keyword that's missing. If "Americans" truly wanted to rule the world, we as a country already would. In business, the dollar is the recognized standard as well as English the standard business language. Our country is one of the only countries that at least tries to help impoverished countries through aid both militarily and with food. So...your point? If your referring to foreign policy...Saddam was/is a hate monger and a genocidal killer. Osama is a extremist who wants all Americans dead and any whom support Israel. You have North Korea building ICBM's that could eventually reach our country. And Americans want to rule the world? If the rest of the world could rule itself maybe they wouldn't need our help.

Americans do not want to rule the world--we've just been stuck with the job of policing it-- because-- for the most part-- the rest of the world is not capable --actually --we (the people) do not even want to be policing the damn thing--it's extremely expensive (in money and the lives of our family members and friends)--it's a thankless job (and the benefits and pay are horrible)--and the time off just doesn't exist---So--I don't know what MOLAH you're getting your "inside word" from--I can assure you they are dead wrong on this one

Dr Dee hit the nail on the head!

The Bush dynasty can't continue until they've taken over the world and become global dictators. Why rule a country when you can rule the whole world?? -RKO-

If America wanted to rule the world, it would be a pile of smoking rubble by now. You have no idea how much it has gone to great lengths to keep out of business that does not threaten it. But the world is a dangerous, hateful place.

I don't think America wants to rule the world. If we did we could start by cutting off our aid from Africa, pulling our troops out of every country and putting them on our own borders and not letting anyone into our country, and letting all those Middle Easterners and Koreans kill each other. After that we could just put our flag in their countries and take them over.

I don't think America wants to 'rule the world'.
I think American wants to 'write the rules for the world'.

We're helping other countries set up their own elections to rule themselves - but we've tell him how to go about it.

I'm not saying what's right or wrong - I'm just saying that how it looks to me.
