Depends on the tradition. Or are Christmas trees stopping your progress?

Progress brings us closer to finding out what we are, and traditions let us remember what we were. in a social environment tradition can be a major set back in a multi ethnic community. Progress would be achieved, and is being achieved by others will to assimilate to one general direction being the greater good, and not letting there past and beliefs bind them.

In the house and family its good to hold on to your traditions, If you desert your heritage you lose your identity, and with the family your identity means allot.

Ignorance is the only obstacle to progress!

What is "progress"?

Here's an example, in college it was presented that some religions in Africa still practice female circumcisions. They have forgotten over time why they do this, they just know "it's always been that way". There are health risks involved, and I am certain it goes against some people's beliefs.

But how does one extrapolate this to bear on progress?

Does it mean, "they are not more like us" or does it mean "if the circumsion becomes infected and the patient dies, doesn't that hurt their (life) progress", or does it mean that women's lib hasn't hit their culture yet?

What is PROGRESS in regards to this question?

Tradition helps give form and structure to belief. When you understand that they are window dressing and not the core part of faith they can be quite useful.

If you forget what the purpose of the tradition is and follow it because "that's the way it's always been" it prevents growth.

No, I don't really agree with it. Traditions are our root to our culture and ancestry. We can make progress by keeping certain traditions and perhaps by modifying the others.
