it is actually called a recovery disc and is normally shipped with your laptop, but as you say you cant do this,so you will have to buy a new xp disc, but dont worry they arnt too expensive, you can get windows xp home(o.e.m) from http://www.dabs.com/productlist.aspx?&NavigationKey=11168&NavigationKey=4294959492&NavigationKey=4294958989&CategorySelectedId=11168&PageMode=1,for £62 ,and this will entitle you to all the freebies and software that accompanies a genuine disc
you could allways ask around for a copied disc, but you will not be able to use such software as ,windows defender, media player 11,and the new internet explorer 7 beta
you can allways have a spring clean by doing these simple tasks
1 download ccleaner from http://www.ccleaner.com/,and run the cleaner through your system to clean out all temp files ,cookies, ect
2 go to add\remove programs and remove any software you no longer use or require
3.go to run and type msconfig and then press the start up tab....you should now uncheck any programs that dont have a direct bearing on windows,i.e quicktime,winzip,abode...but be careful what you uncheck..seek guidance if unsure
4.go to run and type %temp% this will take you to the temp folder ....delete temp folders
5.go to http://www.crucial.com/,and run the online scanner to find your memory type and invest in a 256-512mb upgrade, this should only cost bettween 20 to 40 pounds and will speed up your computer at least 25% faster
these are some easy fixes but a re-install would clean up but not make your p.c any faster
the more memory, the better,oh and a good defrag wouldnt go a miss
good luck

Look I think the suggestions of system restore and doing some cleaning job are all fine but what if your PC crashed one day beyond these and you dont have xp to reboot. My suggestion is go to ebay and pick up an xp for a 10er or even less. I done it for my previous P.3 PC which I ended up selling on ebay for 70 quids. it might not be the original CD but who care? as long as it does the job. Oh by the way ebay registration is a breez and takes a couple of minutes and off you go buying. good luck.

most systems come with 2 discs an installation disc which contains the os and all the other programs and a driver disc
if you have none of these you are in trouble
but there are several utilities that will help
avast is a free anti virus protection
noadware will remove adware (cost)
system mechanic is a good one cleans a lot of crap (cost)
empty your cookies ,temp , and temporary Internet files (use search easy way to find)
download a registry cleaner regseeker is free
also try to download the drivers zip for you system
you shouldn't do this one its illegal :- borrow a friends disc and do a fresh install (or buy one)

Use the system restore disks provided by the manufacturer with the laptop.

Red if you have win XP then all you have to do is go to your restore point where you know the computer was working perfectly. For example say somewhere around six months ago. Then choose the date on your restore point and that should restore your computer to that point. GOOD LUCK RED
