By 'active' I mean outdoor, 'sporty' adventure, suitable for someone with a reasonable level of fitness. I 'm not just looking for extreme sports - might consider something sedate, so long as it's interesting!...

Have you ever try to bike El Camino de Santiago?
it begins in Rocesvalle, France and finish in the Cathedral of Santiago in Galicia, Spain.
I have thinking doing it this Autumn or next springs. In bike it takes you some 2 weeks. You can get a certificate in Roncesvalle, so you can have place to sleep for free (depends if it isn't full).
I recommend you spring or Autumn, because it will not be so full, so warm or so cold!
Also you can enjoy spectacular view, bike across the mountain side of France and Spain.
I have some biker friends that have done it!
Good luck!

In Paris, there's a great business called "Mikes Bikes" They do different bike tours all around the city, they also take you on the trains to the Palace of Versaille and the Monet Gardents etc. The guides are really nice and the trips are great fun. It's worth a look. =o)

I would definately reccommend skiing in the Alps if you haven't before...or as a matter of fact if you have, ive been three times and each and every one has been awesome, the scenery is amazing and skiing is just the biggest rush, it can't be beaten in my opinion.

There are some very nice slopes in france, switzerland, austria and italy. So you choose what language you want to speak!

The Norwegians Roller-blade over mountain passes, pushing themselves along at great speed with a pair of things like ski-sticks. I suppose it's the summer equivalent of cross-country skiing.
