Go to http://www.mormon.org it's the Church's website. What better place to learn about Mormons then from their own website. Wow what a novel idea.
Also Mormon is not the official name of the church. And yes it is a church not a cult. Another name is Latter-Day Saints. But the true name is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
You may have questions about what members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe. Some of the basic beliefs of the Church are:
1. God is our Heavenly Father. He loves us and wants us to return to Him.
2. Jesus Christ is the Son of God. He is our Savior. He redeems us from death by providing the Resurrection. He saves us from sin as we repent.
3. Through the Atonement of Jesus Christ, we can return to live with God if we keep His commandments.
4. The Holy Ghost helps us to recognize truth.
5. The first principles and ordinances of the gospel are faith in Jesus Christ, repentance, baptism, and receiving the gift of the Holy Ghost.
6. The Church of Jesus Christ has been restored to the earth.
7. The priesthood authority of God exists in His Church today, just as it did in the original Church.
8. The Bible and the Book of Mormon are the word of God.
9. God reveals His will to prophets today, just as He did anciently.
10. Our life has a sacred purpose.
11. Families can be together forever.
12. Through serving others, we can experience joy and draw closer to God.
The best way for you to receive answers to your questions is to talk with a friend or acquaintance who is a member of the Church. We can locate a member in your area who would be glad to talk with you. You are also welcome to come and worship with us.

Mormons or Latter Day Saints are a cult/sect that follows the writings of Joseph Smith Jr. What is interesting to note about the Book of Mormon though is that Joseph Smith did not write it. It really was translated off of old plates.

Mormon is a colloquial term used to refer specifically to members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and in some contexts to members of smaller denominations within the Latter Day Saint movement. The term is derived from the name of The Book of Mormon, one of the faith's four books of scripture. The book, in turn, derives its name from Mormon, one of the primary prophets described therein.
The term Mormon [1] was first used in modern times in the 1830s as a pejorative to describe those who believed that Joseph Smith, Jr. had been called as a prophet of God, and who accepted The Book of Mormon as scripture.
Despite some misconceptions over similar nicknames and stereotypes, Mormons are not the same religious group as Quakers (members of the Religious Society of Friends), Mennonites, or Amish, nor are they Jehovah's Witnesses. Mormons originated separately from these groups and are distinct in culture, practice, and theology. Mormonism originated in the United States; the Quaker and Mennonite faiths originally came from Europe.
One source of confusion in regions where Spanish, French, Russian, Polish, or Italian are the predominant languages comes from a mistranslation in the film Witness (starring Harrison Ford) into Spanish, French, Russian, Polish, Hungarian, and Italian. "Amish" was translated incorrectly to "Mormon". How this happened with different translators into different languages is not clear, but demonstrates a general misunderstanding about the identity of either the Amish or the Mormons, or both.

Believe it or not, Mormons think that God is an alien who was once a man, who came to Earth to rule us with his alien goddess wife. If we follow the teachings of Jesus and the prophet Joseph Smith we too can become gods of our own planet somewhere in the universe. I kid you not. Research it.

It is a Christian religion. Here is a list of their basic beliefs:
1 We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
2 We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
3 We believe that through the atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
4 We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
5 We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof. (See Priesthood Organization home page)
6 We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
7 We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth. (See Gifts of the Spirit)
8 We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
9 We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God. (See Prayer, Fasting, and Revelation home page)
10 We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory. (See Second Coming of Jesus Christ home page)
11 We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may. (See Politics: Political Teachings; Tolerance)
12 We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law. (See Teachings About Law home page)
13 We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul--We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.
It must be repeated that “these articles are not and were not intended to be a complete and final exposition of beliefs…” [6] The articles do not discuss many facets of Latter-day Saint belief such as “celestial marriage, salvation for the dead, temple work in all its phases, the resurrection, and degrees of glory in the eternal worlds.” [7] Yet, they still serve as a useful introduction to Latter-day Saint beliefs.
