I'm a dancer, and I always warm up properly before I do any work and do lots of stretching afterwards.
But when I sleep, I sometimes wake up with the worst cramp ever in my leg and it wont go for ages!
I end up with a sore leg for a good few days and its annoying!!!
Why does this happen, and can I do anything to avoid it?

It's recently been proven that stretching before and after excercise doesn't prevent injury but a good warm up and warm down definately helps.

If you are fairly young and still growning, then these craps could be the pains that come with growing. I used to get cramps just like that a couple of years ago but they're starting to stop now and my growing is too.

If it's not that, it could be that there is a neurological or blood clotting or muscle spasm problem but most of these are fairly extreme and would present other symptoms so don't get too worried.

Muscle spasming could be it, this is where the muscle doesn't get a lot of work for a long time and then occassionally gets overworked, these sudden changes of extreme could increase the risk of muscular injury and can often lead to muscle tear or worse if the person doesn't begin to regulate their excercise.

Neurological problems, that is where the nerves and neurons aren't sending messages to the brain properly and can lead to almost any unusual activity. That is very rare though.

Blood clotting can cause the muscles to get a lack of blood and then they can cramp up to try and increase blood flow.

My final thought is that it could be a lack of calcium, if you don't gt enough calcium in your diet, then your bones won't grow properly but your muscles will and then they will start to contract to shorten their length. Also, the muscles require calcium too so the bones can often take needed calcium from the muscles and use it for bone development giving the muscles a lack of calcium.

I hope that helps.

When you dance..... do you drink more water then you would on a normal day? You could be flushing out electrolytes like potassium and magnesium. These are two vitamins very important in muscle contraction. Try taking a multivitamin right before bed and drink something like Power-aid or Gatorade when dancing.

Your body is low on potassium! How every by just eating bananas its not going to help! In order for potassium to be absorbed correctly you need magnesium and calcium to help the absorption process! But the same applys tho magnesium and calcium! Best option is to get a good supplement with all three in it!
Good Luck!

Geesh, put soap under your sheets?? LOL

Why don't you talk to a doctor about this problem and see if you may of damaged your spine or something during one of your routines.

Try laying in a tub of very warm water before going to bed at night. Ask your doctor if it's safe to take something before bed (Ibuprofen) or something.

Drink lots of water during the day and yes, eat your bananas!

you can be in the best of shape and still have poor circulation in your legs especially when your sleeping. theyu're commonly known as "charley horses" what i do is, i make sure my legs are covered while sleeping and i pace a pillowe underneath the area that cramps up. i also take vitamin e which is good for the circulation. please check with your dr. before taking any meds. on your own. good luck justicejamie888

Because when you sleep you curl your legs. Your blood cannot circulate when your legs are curled for such a long time. try sleeping with straight legs. Trust me, i suffered the same thing before
