to empty their stomaches. dogs are strictly carnivorous animals and when they eat grass it's usually to empty their stomaches because their stomaches are upset. try switching the dog food and use a 3/1 ratio 3 (old food, 1 new food) for a couple weeks gradually increasing the amount until its all new food. do not use dog food that has "animal byproducts" in it. "animal byproduct" is a nice way of saying dog and cat product. don't believe me, then research the term on the net.

some believe :-

a)the dogs can differentiate the medicinal properties contain inside the grass thus eating them to cure sickness on their own.
b) eating the grass to create an involuntary vomit by the dog

but watch out for chemicals sprayed on the grass these days! the dog may be poisoned by eating grass.

Actually when its stomach is upset and they want to take that out they eat grass. Dogs are not meant to eat grass and they know that this particular thing will make them to take the things out of there stomach. If you have noticed they don't swallow the grass, just chew it and the juice which mix with there saliva to make them vomit things out.

No one really knows. There is a ton of anecdotal evidence for just about everything brought up by the other respondents, but no studies have conclusively answered your question. It is generally considered normal behavior and is rarely a problem. - g^2

P.S. I don't completely buy into the "dogs eat it to barf" theory, as I've seen way too many dogs eat some all the time and never throw it up, but end up pooping it out. . .

There isn't any rock solid explanation for that.
Some say it is to help settle their stomachs, some say to help with digestion, some say it is just something to do.
Personally, I think it is just a way to get a little extra fiber to aid in the passage of feces.
