I love the maniacal musical stylings of bands like System of a Down and the Deftones. My two year old worked out how to turn the stereo on and listens to them over the headphones at full volume. Should I stop this?

Yes, definitely stop this. The music it's self may not be harmful but the volume certainly will be. Children usually have sensitive ears maybe you have already done some harm by playing it to loud when he was younger. Try putting some classical music on for a change it stimulates the mind Mozart and Beethoven work pretty good. AT 2 yrs old you can still can or influence what he listens to.

By allowing a toddler to listen to headphones at full volume, you are abusing this child. Shelter this precious child from harm, let him screw up his life with his poor choices when he's an adult, but for now, you are the one responsible to see to it that no harm comes his way. Also, if you really want to see him blossom, go out and buy some little kid's CD's, you will really see him come to life as they cater to his level. Be conscious that the underlying tone and message of heavy metal is often about sensuality, drug use, and also violence. These are all pursuits which cause initial thrills, but more often than not can lead to depression, drug use, violence, promiscuity, and sometimes even suicide. Sure, this may sound a little extreme, but we are all a product of our environment, and a toddler is unable to decipher mature themes from reality. You naturally have a maternal instinct, you know in your heart what's bad and good for him, listen to that voice from within, and love that child for all he's worth. Conversely, treat him like ****, and neglect him, then wonder why he's in prison at the age of 19...

I would not be as worried about the type of music as the volume. no matter what the music is your toddler needs to keep the music level down. Some suggestions to taking away the turning up power, 1 if it is a twist dial to turn it up, set the volume where you want it, and then put a small rubber band around it to hold it tigh, keep wrapping it around until snug. 2 if it is a slide version, take a piece of tin foil, or semi-hard paper and fold it up and stick it in the slot after setting the volume. If these don't work, move it out of reach, or slap the hand. do what you have to do to protect their hearing!!!!!!

There's nothing wrong with your child listening to heavy metal but you shouldn't have it too loud in their ears, that could cause premature deafness, just turn down the volume some and left them dance the night away.

First, it can permanently damage your child's eardrum if the sound was played to loud. Then, IMHO, your child will lose the ability to view things positively because most heavy metal music focus on topics like hate, anger, depression etc. If you find your child unaffected or unchanged even with this kind of music, it's ok.

I would say yes, especially at full volume. Your child's ear drums are very sensitive and should not be exposed to loud heavy metal.

No, but I wouldn't let them do it constantly. You should let them have a bit more variance, so by all means let them listen to Deftones, but also introduce them to other types of music, like orchestra, pop and light rock. It just gives them more variance and the ability to choose their own stylistic preferences :)

The music itself is not bad for him. The volume is what you need to worry about. Your child is still developing and you risk the possibility of harming his/her hearing for the rest of his/her life.
