Cats are very curious creatures.
They really like being the "only child", especially if that is what they have known for most of their lives.
They are very fickle too. If they want attention, they feel you had better give it to them, if they don't want it, you had better leave them alone.
I have 4 of them, it took a while, but they all learned to get along(except the 20year old, she hates everyone).
The 3 that get along actually play with our ferret, it is the cutest thing ever.
I don't reccommend this immediately though, as my cats grew up with the ferret, 2 of them have known him since they were 8 days old when I got them, and the other has known him since he was roughly 4 weeks old. So they KNOW how to play with him, and don't see him as prey.
My 20 year old cat was really upset when we got our ferret, but she got over it, as your cats probably will do too.
I wish you the best of luck, have patience.
Cats are funny things, most of the time I swear they don't know they are animals.
Good Luck!

Cats are just independent creatures. I have two that think that they're dogs....they come when they're called, the follow me around all of the time, they "talk" back to me etc. etc. A cats temperment has a lot to do with how they are treated as kittens. I cuddled them a lot, picked them up a lot, and held them when there were people they weren't used to (stranger anxiety and all). Now they're pretty friendly, and at 5 years old (they're littermates), they've never bitten or scratched anyone out of anger.
If the cats don't want to be played with, don't play with them. Give them some room and time to adjust to the ferret. If you can, put the cats in one room and the ferret outside the door so that they can get used to the scent without being able to attack it. That may help for an easier introduction.

I know why you might think that cats are stuck up, but you don't get them. see cats are really individual characters and have personalities... they are just like people who appreciate there personal space, but when they crave affection, they don't show it like dogs do, i mean they would come sit round you and wait for you to notice them! but inside they do crave affection. i know that for a fact cause i had cats all my life. you know, try petting the cat form time to time and earn its confidence, stroke it under its ears and talk to it while you do that, also try kissing it on the forehead, when you hear it purrrrrrrrrr then you're doing ok, just be patient and try to give it attention as much as the ferret, cats when raised alone usually are anti social to new pets, but eventually cats adapt well and it will soon be okay.

I loved Hockeymoogirl's answer. It's true. Cats are not stuck up. They like things their own way, and are living in our world. compromise, a little. They DO do us favors, like purring and and playing with us, and letting us stroke them when we are feeling down. They feel everything. They also get jealous and can feel left out, if you disrupt your personable bond with them by bringing in a new friend. Help them to believe that they are just as important as your new pet, as was suggested, and they will. They need to feel secure in your love for them, and all else will fall into place when they get used to the new change. I too, have a 19 year old cat (not quite 20, yet) that hates everything and everyone, but she is tolerant and gets along. She is well-loved and knows it. Of course her nose would be bent out of shape if I brought in a new "friend" for us. Be patient and tolerant. Things will work out...

i must disagree cats are not fussy, just more clever and weiry of others. the cat feels left out now you have a new pet, that should be obvious. just show the cats you love them and the ferret is an equal.

Cats think they own the universe and humans are their devoted slaves. Then you went and got a ferret that they think stinks. How dare you! You ungrateful slave. As Queen Victoria would say, They are not amewsed.

cats have a short attention spanned so when they are done with playing with one toy they have to find something that will work as toy number 2 and when they don't find something soon, they get a little ticked off. I mean you only live 9 times :)

In ancient Egypt, cats were worshipped as Gods by people. This is something they have never forgotten, even where we have!
