One year olds have a very short attention span. Keep it simple you are not going to be able to hold their attention very long.
Make a list of activities your child enjoys and can do well. Then try incorporating them into a party. Arrange the time when your child will not be tired, I recommend cupcakes they are easier for a smaller child, colorful streamers, Any presents wrap loosely or in gift bags so they will not have to have to much help unwrapping them. If you decide on a clown choose a character your child is familiar with so as not to frighten the child. 1/2 hour is probably the longest you are going to be able to hold your child's attention

He's too young to be choosy so go with a theme you like or that you think he likes right now. Cars and trucks, Sponge-Bob, sports, etc. Pinatas are fun for the older kids. You can go to a park where the kids can play and entertain themselves and have your man (if you have one) bring the BBQ and provide hamburgers and hot dogs to your guest. It's cheap and fun for the summer. Chuck-e-Cheese can get old after a while. Good luck!

Keep it very simple, family and close friends. My first child's first birthday I planned this great big party at Chuckeecheese, invited her "classmates" from daycare, the whole nine. Spent hundreds of dollars for nothing, kids too young to play games, and chuck scared the he!! out of them. Next 2 kids had their 1st bday at the house with family and friends, one had sesame street character cake, and one had dinasours cake. Got better pictures, had better time, and saved money.

small and simple. invite immediate family and do ice cream and cake after dinner. blow a few balloons and get a small character place setting like Elmo or Dora. Save the big stuff for the later years

look for good photo opportunities. the child won't really understand the party, but you can make the most of it. don't go too crazy, save that for when he will get more out of it!
