I'm growing more worried each year with how small my daughter is. She will be six on July 27th and weighs 38 lbs and is much shorter than all the kids in her kindergarten class.
When people ask her how old she is, and they take a guess; everyone says 3!! I feel bad for her, because she shakes her head and holds up 5 fingers and I know it bugs her when everyone says she's too small.
Our doctor doesn't seem worried; he says because my husband and I aren't tall (5'3" and 5'7) and my mom is 5'2 100 lbs that she just may not be very big. I'm NOT buying that. She was born a whopping 8 lbs 11 oz and has MAYBE gained 1 or 2 lbs in this last YEAR! She can still wear summer clothes that are size 3T...something is not right, I can just feel it. Call it mothers instict. How do I get my doctor to listen that I don't feel things are okay? I want her to be referred to a pediatrican or specialist. Help me! Any ideas, comments or advice would be greatly appreciated!

you can get a second opinion from another doctor if you are really worried about it . from what you described here that seems normal actually , if her parents are short you cant expect her to be very tall right now , wait till shes about 10 then she should be much taller . if she doesnt grow to be more than the height she is now in 2 years then thats when you should worry a bit and take her to a doc. .

I wouldn't worry as much about her size in comparison to the other kids in her class, as whether she has changed her rate of growth recently. My daughter is small for her age too, she will be 4 in October and is the smallest in her daycare group, BUT she has been growing consistantly and has stayed at the same percentile for height and weight since she was a baby. If your daughter is falling further behind each year then there may be a problem that your doctor has not picked up. I would take her to a different doctor to get her checked out thoroughly. If that doctor says she has a problem THEN deal with whatever it is, get whatever care she needs and I wish you all the strength, love and luck that you will need to help her. If they say she is fine then accept it. If you drag her to more doctors and worry when you don't need to your stress will be affecting her and she will feel there is something wrong with her when really she is perfect the way she is.

I hope all goes well, best of luck

You don't need to convince him. You simply tell him that you are concerned and that he must refer you. If there is nothing wrong then you are the only one wasting your money. On the referral he can even state that he does not belief anything to be the matter if it makes him feel better. I suspected that my son had a problem and the doctor also told me I shouldn't worry "he's just a bit slow" I ignored him and told him to refer me anyway. Turned out my son was autistic and because we picked it up early he was able to get help from an autistic school and he has been making great progress. Don't leave this. If it's nothing then fine if there is a problem the sooner you know the sooner you can look at your options. I pray that all will be well.
