Because the Israeli's are God's chosen people, just like the USA is blessed by God.

This means they can do whatever the hell they want to do.

Can't really say any more than that for fear of being branded an anti-semite, although as everyone knows the Palestinians are semites too. So by killing Palestinians, does this make the Israeli's anti-semites?

I am disappointed with Israel though. I grew up learning about the holocaust, and so I had an instinctive support and sympathy for the Israeli's, after all they've been through etc etc. But now I think they are a nasty bunch of land-stealing bullies.

Yes, I feel for the ordinary Israelis that suffer terrorist bombings every week, but if you watch the news you'll know that the Iraeli govt. also attack and kill ordinary Palestinian civilians every week. Just because one sort of illegal killing is done by a nation and its military doesn't make it any better than the illegal killing done by suicide bombers.

Yes, some militant arab groups vow to exterminate Israel, and that's wrong. But have you noticed how Israel has been actively doing its best to exterminate Palestine in recent years? By killing its people, invading and settling land that was given to them by international agreement, destroying its infrastructure and destabilising any chance of it forming a lasting government.

Israel's "efforts at making peace" have including handing over Gaza, sure. Then they cut off all foreign aid and blockaded all exports so that Gaza cannot support its own economy. Then they fired a few of their own bombs and rockets at a beach killing families who were enjoying a day out (do you watch the news?). Now they've blown up the main electricity supply, which was also essential for the pumping of water to many homes in Gaza. Their new "peace" offer is that they will now supply some of their generating excess to Gaza - at a cost of course.

What the Israeli government is actually doing is more than being "reckless and heavy-handed". They want to maintain complete control over the Palestinians. They have no intention of allowing them to form an independent nation, have their own government, or have a successful economy. They just want to keep them all locked up in one place, in fear and poverty, for ever.

Maybe this is done at least in part in the name of defence because, as you say, in Israel's Government's view some of the Palestinians cannot be trusted anymore with their peace commitments. I'd say the same is true the other way around, and I'd agree with them. But it's totally against international law to punish an entire civilian population for the crimes of a small armed minority.

Imagine if a small gang of French extremists blew themselves up on the New York underground. Bush says "the French government has always stood against us, I hold it and the French people responsible" and nukes Paris. How would you respond then?

The reason Israel gets away with it is:

1. Collective guilt about the holocaust
2. They are supported by the US, it's all part of the current world order. To oppose Israel is to oppose the US, and countries like the UK are so s.h.i.t. scared about the prospect of losing the US as a trading partner they'd do anythng to keep them happy.
3. The UN, which has been condemning Israel's actions, is toothless
4. Like it or not, the prevailing view in the West is that the life of a brown person is worth less than the life of a white person. (Israelis are honorary white guys in this equation). Think about it hard and tell me I'm wrong. We're all a bunch of racist bigots, who think it matters less when a Palestinian or an Iraqi is killed, because "they're used to death". Israelis, Americans and Europeans on the other hand, are "civilised", and it's much worse for one of them to die, because we can associate with their family's pain.

Note to anyone who thinks to accuse me of anti-semitism: I don't hate Jews. I don't hate ordinary Israelis. It's the politicians that are responsible, this is an entirely political situation. The government and not the people of Israel are responsible for these crimes, and it's frankly disgusting that we stand by and let it do as it likes. The people of Gaza, and the people of Israel, deserve better

What would you do if you have to deal with terrorist bombings everyday against your people (go watch the news or read history if you dont believe this), if you have to negotiate with people (Hamas and their filth) who vow to have your nation exterminated, if your efforts at making peace (the Gaza turn-over to the Palestinians last year) are rewarded with more attacks, bombs and rockets and finally a kidnapping? (I would certaintly love to hear your answer to this.)
What the Israelis are doing (despite its being too reckless and heavy-handed) is in the name of defence because the Palestinians (or at least some of them) in Israel's view cannot be trusted anymore with their peace commitments.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that it is because they are tired of Hamas killing and kidnapping their citizens. You seem to leave out the fact that the Isreeli incursion into Gaza was sparked by the unproved killing of two soliders in Isreal and the kidnapping of the third. I think a better question would be: How can Hamas continue car bombings, assasinations, and kidnappings and expect no one to retaliate?

They get away with it because they have the full and uncritical backing of the USA. Without constant protection from and many special deals with the USA Israel would and could not exist.

Easy! Israel doesn't give a toss about anyone else - They certainly don't care what other countries think, when they are under attack.. Hitler may have committed atrocious acts on them, but look at what they do now! They should remember & live in peace!
