♡Yes, I've been living here in Japan for almost 9 years now. I came here knowing only the basic Japanese polite greetings, and not that good of a pronunciation! It took me about one year (or a little more) as well to have a basic understanding of the language. I still now run into very difficult Japanese that throws me from time to time. I came here and went into the free Japanese classes at my local community center. This was important in my case because although my hubby offered to teach me, (he's so kind!) sometimes the way a man speaks (words/ phrases) is not appropriate for a woman! At first, I even took a double class!(*^o^*) My hubby spoke to me ONLY in Japanese during that time as well which helped me a lot. I also studied katakana and hiragana then to help me with various words and pronunciation. Speaking it and practicing conversation whenever you can are most important! Hope this helps.♡

Yes, for two years.
I would say it takes about a year to become quite proficient...
Reading kanji is the most difficult situation.
Newspapers have about 1000!
Still, alot of people speak English, and this will help you on your way!
