good question. I thought of this when I was ten. I put water in a bottle and put it in long term storage to see what would happen to the water. How long water will look like water etc. It soon had some white dust and odd molecules floating in it. I dont know where it came from. I was sure I closed the lid tightly.. It may be because the water is tap water to begin with?
So I think no water can remain indefinitely in the shelves - at some point of time it would just become bad, unmarketable, not sellable, threat to consumer health.. So it contains a "MUST BE SOLD BEFORE THIS DATE:" label.
Anyway, bottled water sold in India does not even pass basic laboratory tests, so it really doesnt matter. Just look into the water for any foreign particles floating in it and if it loks and tastes drinkable take a risk and drink it - the Government needs to regulate the bottled water/drinking water industry instead of ordering what kind of vessel rail passengers need to use for drinking and eating - instead of controlling the food and water contracters who are selling it in the first place inside the rail carriage - HORRIBLE, to say the least. I have to kick Lalu in his ***.

I burst out laughing at the answer that there is no oxygen in water. Water is H2O, nothing but hydrogen and oxygen.
Bottled water isn't guaranteed to be sterile, and after time bactera will muitiply. And some materials used to make bottles can leach into the contents over time.
You should not even reuse smaller bottles unless they are thoroughly sanitized.

All water has microbes/bacteria that may taint the water in a certain amount of time. Dates accomplish two things- 1. It reduces liability to the company and 2. People look for dates on almost everything now and if it's not there they buy one that does.
