Ok I'm being serious here, this is not a slam on islam or its people. I only know from the US media that in certain middle eastern countries women have to wear the burkha outside and accompanied by a male. Other countries its just the covering of the hair. I have heard this is to keep women from tempting men. What is the rationale behind this?

Islam is not mysoginistic religion, but arab culture is. And at this moment arab flavor of islam is prevalent in the world.
There is always stron connection between Islam and state, so there could be American Islam, European Islam as contrast of Arab ic Islam, same belifs but diferent culture, and diferent status of woman. The western states are mainly guilty for letting Arabic Islam grow in the west, they could have control over Imams as states have in the middle east.
Arab culture have never freed woman and given them financial freedom so that she can truly be independent of husband .
In Europe this was the same before suffragette movement.

So ther society is stepping on our road but only very slowly, an we expect that they are on our equal footage.
After some real dialogue, and some suggestion and a lot of education in woman population I think that it we could see some changes.

Lust is evil..it persuades a married man to cheat on his wife..
It can force someones wife into an extra marital affair...
It can destroy relationships and families...its evil and disgusting.
I know of Iran...Where women are supposed to cover their heads and body with the typical Iranian robe..
but in Iran women are liberated..
they work and do all kinds of stuff..they contribute in the economy...
In Pakistan there is no such restriction...but there is jurispudence to regulate the cases of rape and assault...
In short...even if there exists such things it is to kerb the evil...
It is only the perverted portion of humans who cry on women veiling themsleves (which prevents them form viewing flesh) ..
They dont realise that these acts give way to a chaste society..where there is respect for women..unlike the western societies...where women are looked upon as objects of satisfying lust...

Misogynistic is hatred of or strong prejudice against women.
Islam is not. Women got to have own property and many more rights long before Christian's got any. Though some forms seem to be somewhat extreme, they are as extreme toward men.

Of course they are gonna show you only what they think can be used against Muslims. I know my mother and sisters wear Hijab and while I know the answer to your question, I would like a Muslim sister to reply to it since her being a women can understand it much better than me.

the requirement for woman is to cover all her body except her face and her hands. for a man is to cover what's between his belly to his knees.
for covering the face, it's recommended if the woman is very beautiful in a way that may cause trouble, then it's better if she cover her face for security reason.
it goes under 3 categories:
1. tradition culture
2. protection
3. do it for the sake of God alone.
tradition culture: people inherited after generation, and got used to this custom.
protection: to protect society from falling in sins, kidnapping, raping...etc . for example: it was recommended for Muhammad wives to cover their faces so no one will know that they are the wives of the prophet Muhammad and may hurt them, as Muhammad used to have alot of enemies of Arab pagans.
do it for sake of God alone: and that's what is suppose to be all about, do it for God sake. because God said so.

most all religions are mysoginistic. The bible says women cant speak in church and must obey their husbands....
